A new report from Newzoo details how video games performed throughout 2025. The data shows which console and PC games became the most popular, and which ones lost players last year.
Two slides from the presentation were particularly insightful, revealing a consistent trend. They showed which games generate the most revenue on consoles and PCs. Notably, sports games consistently top the charts for console players, year after year.
Sports Games Don’t Make Money on PC
Newzoo’s latest report analyzes video game data from the past year on PCs and consoles. It highlights the top-selling games, those that generated the most revenue, and the games with the largest monthly player base.
On the PC front, the top ten games by revenue (in six major markets) were:
- Battlefield 6
- ARC Raiders
- Schedule 1
- Monster Hunter: Wilds
- Borderlands 4
- EA Sports FC 26
- R.E.P.O.
- Oblivion Remastered
- Expedition 33
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
By contrast, the console market seemed laser-focused on sports games in 2025:
- EA Sports FC 26
- NBA 2K26
- Battlefield 6
- Madden NFL 26
- MLB The Show 25
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows
- EA Sports College Football 26
- Pokémon Legends: Z-A
- Ghost of Yotei
- ARC Raiders
Data shows that half of the top-selling console games in 2025 were yearly sports titles. These games are popular because players often buy them out of habit, making them reliable choices. This suggests that PC gamers tend to be more willing to try new and different types of games.
Many games initially launch on PC as early access versions. This offers players a wider variety of titles to choose from, although some of these games never fully develop and remain unfinished for a long time.
Console gaming has a very different audience size for each game. Fortnite is the most popular, followed by Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto 5, Roblox, and Minecraft. Sports games don’t appear until the sixth most popular spot, and even then it’s EA Sports FC 25, closely followed by EA Sports FC 26.
Rocket League is often considered a sports game, and it’s the seventh most popular game among console players. However, unlike many sports titles, it doesn’t come out with a new version every year.
PC and console gaming trends are quite alike. Counter-Strike 2 is the most popular game, followed by Minecraft, Roblox, and Fortnite, all within the top five. Call of Duty also makes the top ten. Beyond those, the most played games on PC are generally titles you won’t find on consoles, such as League of Legends and Dota 2.
Newzoo’s 2024 report showed that PC gaming attracted more new players than console gaming, a surprising finding. The report also indicated that microtransactions accounted for 58% of the revenue generated by PC games.
