The eagerly awaited sequel to “Constantine 2” featuring Keanu Reeves has received an extensive and heartening boost from writer Akiva Goldsman, leaving fans thrilled at the prospect of seeing the character back on the silver screen once more.
The initial “Constantine” movie was released in 2005, featuring Keanu Reeves as the DC Comics character, Hellblazer. Despite receiving mixed critical reviews, fans appreciated Reeves’ portrayal of the intricate character. Ever since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting another “Constantine” film from DC and Warner Bros. Over the years, discussions about a second movie have circulated, but in 2022, WB officially announced a sequel, confirming Reeves’ return for the follow-up. More recently, the writer of the upcoming film has shared some insightful updates on the progress of the script for the sequel.
In an interview with Collider, Goldsman discussed working on Constantine 2’s script and mentioned that earlier attempts to revive the character for a TV show fell through due to rights complications. He explained, “Things are going well. I’m writing a script for Constantine 2. It’s promising. I aim to submit it to my collaborators soon. There has always been this drive, if not necessarily urgent, to revisit the project. We tried to revive it for TV, but we couldn’t secure the rights; they were tied up somewhere else. A TV series was in the works at one point.”
Goldsman’s remarks follow Reeves’ disclosure about a sequel being initiated due to an earlier interview in 2021. During his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the actor expressed interest in reprising the role of Constantine. Three years later, during another visit to The Late Show, he mentioned that talks for the sequel began immediately after the 2021 interview. Goldsman aims to finalize the script promptly so the project can progress, but it may be some time before we see the character on screen again. As per the new DC Universe, Constantine appears to belong to the Elseworlds universe, implying that Constantine 2 might be categorized as an Elseworlds production. For those unaware, Elseworlds is a DC label for stories not strictly part of the current DC Universe continuity.
At present, there’s no word on when or if James Gunn will complete the script for the upcoming Constantine movie and bring it to the silver screen. Still, the anticipation builds as Keanu Reeves is set to reprise his role as Constantine. In the past film, Reeves delivered a dark intensity and cynical charm that struck a chord with viewers, making the movie a standalone success. His portrayal has since gained a devoted fanbase, leaving fans eagerly awaiting his return to the character.
