Contraband Development Stopped At Xbox

Xbox has stopped development of Contraband.

As reported by Stephen Totilo at Game File, it appears that Microsoft has temporarily halted work on the forthcoming project at Avalanche Studios. The project, which has been in development for five years, is currently paused, as indicated in the report.

In his report, Totilo mentions that Microsoft chose not to discuss the status of the game, while Avalanche had yet to respond before the article was published. Moreover, he noted that games from studios like Platinum, Kojima Productions, and Asobo are still being developed according to reliable sources.

When Microsoft carried out widespread layoffs at Xbox in early July, there were many questions about the status of Contraband among fans. Although it wasn’t explicitly mentioned, a job posting seemed to imply that work on the game was still ongoing. This role was intended for someone to manage the live service aspects of the game.

According to Jason Schreier from Bloomberg, not only does he confirm the report, but he also adds that the project ‘Contraband’ has been officially scrapped.

In a statement on the studio’s website, Avalanche games confirmed that development has stopped.

For several years, Avalanche Studios Group and Xbox Game Studios Publishing have been working together on Contraband. However, at present, development on this project has been halted temporarily while we assess its future direction. We appreciate the enthusiasm shown by the community since our announcement and will provide an update on what’s coming next as soon as possible.

Back at E3 2021, it was initially unveiled that “Contraband” would be a cooperative, open-world game. This game is designed to take place in a fictitious setting during the 1970s.

Recently, it’s reveal trailer had also been delisted from the official Xbox YouTube Channel.
