Images have appeared online showing what the canceled Xbox game, Contraband, might have looked like if it had been released. The screenshots reveal the game’s potential multiplayer design.
Avalanche Studios, the team behind Just Cause, first showed off the game with a promising trailer in 2021. While we only saw a short teaser and no actual gameplay, things appeared to be progressing well. However, a lack of updates and its absence from major events suggested development was facing difficulties. In August, it was officially announced that work on the game had stopped to reconsider its direction, and several people lost their jobs as a result, leading many to believe the project was cancelled. Now, we’re getting our first look at what the game might have been.
Contraband Would’ve Had Four-Player Multiplayer and Stylized Graphics, Screenshots Reveal
Thanks to a portfolio discovered online by mp1st, we’ve gotten a new look at the canceled game from Avalanche Studios. The portfolio, created by a UI artist who worked on the project, includes screenshots of the game’s user interface and overall design. These images reveal the studio’s intended aesthetic – a retro style for characters and fonts, evoking the look of the late 1990s. The screenshots also demonstrate how the game would have played, with players joining matches and forming four-person teams to complete levels. One image showcases the “Downtown” map, offering a glimpse of what gameplay might have looked like.
Okay, so I’m hearing some interesting stuff, but I’m trying not to get too excited just yet. We haven’t actually seen any gameplay, so this is all we have to go on for now. Still, it’s really neat to see what they were aiming for with the multiplayer. It’s not officially canceled, though honestly, with no news lately, I’m not holding my breath. But if it does come together, I think it could be one of the most original games Xbox has seen in a long time, and I’m really hoping it does!
