Controversial Video Game Adaptation With 41% Rotten Tomatoes Score Becomes a Streaming Success

After its debut in 2022, the movie adaptation of Uncharted has been thriving on a popular streaming service, climbing up the rankings. Featuring Tom Holland as the main character Nathan Drake, along with Mark Wahlberg, Sophia, Ali, Tati Gabrielle, and Antonio Banderas, this live-action version follows Drake and his companions in their quest to uncover the long-lost treasure of the Magellan expedition. However, it’s worth noting that some video game enthusiasts were not overly enthusiastic about the film’s reception.

The movie is inspired by the action-adventure video game series developed by Naughty Dog, best known for creating “The Last of Us.” The franchise began in 2007 with “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune,” and subsequent titles like “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy” and a remastered version of “Uncharted: A Thief’s End” followed. Notably, the game that served as the greatest inspiration for the film was released in 2022 alongside its live-action counterpart. Naughty Dog’s game series, with “A Thief’s End” being a notable example, is often praised for its cinematic quality, standing alongside games like “Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice,” “Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns Of The Patriots,” and “The Last of Us Part 2.”

Uncharted Movie Bags Number Two Spot on Amazon Prime Video’s US Chart

According to MovieWeb, the film “Uncharted” has climbed up to the second position in the U.S. top 10 movies chart on Amazon Prime Video. This is quite a significant leap from its previous spot at number six just a week ago. Released digitally in 2022, “Uncharted” has recently shared behind-the-scenes footage and it’s fascinating to see the movie adaptation reaching such high rankings three years later. The film made its way to Max at the beginning of 2025 and can now be purchased or rented on Prime Video, offering one of the most affordable prices compared to other streaming services.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve been eagerly awaiting news about a potential sequel to the adrenaline-pumping movie “Uncharted” that graced our screens. Despite not being a blockbuster among gamers of the series, producer Charles Roven confirmed Sony’s interest in making another film. Interestingly, it seems the film resonated more with movie enthusiasts unacquainted with the source material, offering an exhilarating treasure-hunting escapade suitable for all ages. At present, it holds a 41% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an unexpectedly positive 89% score on Popcornmeter. While gamers criticized the movie for falling short in terms of writing and storytelling compared to the games, newcomers have praised it as an enjoyable adventure without the pressure of comparison.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Sony is working on more captivating adaptations from their incredible video game library. Apart from the ongoing live-action series of ‘The Last of Us’ under HBO and the upcoming ‘Uncharted’ and ‘Ghost of Tsushima’ movies, Sony has another project in development.

Amazon Prime is also preparing a show based on ‘God of War’, and the showrunner recently revealed their plans for multiple seasons. This series follows the journey of Spartan warrior Kratos as he seeks vengeance through various ancient mythologies. Interestingly, the Amazon adaptation has secured Netflix’s ‘The Witcher’ writer Tania Lotia, who also contributed to shows like ‘Invincible’, ‘Carnival Row’, and ‘Swamp Thing’.

With Sony giving the green light to so many live-action adaptations, it’s clear that their games have a cinematic edge. Given the success of ‘Uncharted’, it won’t be surprising if we hear about a sequel soon!
