Insomniac Games is famous for creating fun, family-friendly platformer games like Ratchet & Clank and the original Spyro series. More recently, in 2018, they expanded into the superhero world with Marvel’s Spider-Man, a game that has become a popular series with multiple installments.
In 2021, Insomniac Games surprised everyone again by announcing they were also developing a Wolverine game. After a short teaser trailer, updates were scarce for a long time. Recently, during a PlayStation State of Play event in September, they showed a much more detailed look at Marvel’s Wolverine, and it seems to be the game fans have wanted ever since X-Men Origins: Wolverine came out in 2009. Here’s a rundown of some of the features that have been officially confirmed.
Marvel’s Mortal Kombat
The Blood Content Is Wild
The combat in the game is incredibly violent and bloody. From the start, with a visibly wounded Wolverine, it’s far more graphic than what we’ve seen in Insomniac’s *Spider-Man* games. Wolverine’s attacks with his claws are brutal, and this level of intensity wasn’t fully captured in previous movies until *Logan* and the upcoming *Deadpool & Wolverine*. By showing off this gore, Insomniac has demonstrated they truly understand the character of Wolverine.
The trailer didn’t shy away from showing brutal combat, with enemies being stabbed, dismembered, and even having their skulls pierced. The death animations were incredibly violent, reminiscent of games like *Mortal Kombat*. It’s possible the developers, Insomniac, were inspired by the intense combat in Santa Monica Studio’s *God of War* series. Regardless, the gameplay in *Marvel’s Wolverine* appears to be a thrilling and bloody experience.
Marvel’s Uncharted
Packed With Adventure
Insomniac Games’ *Spider-Man* titles are all open-world action adventures taking place in New York City. While many would enjoy a similar open-world experience with Wolverine, *Marvel’s Wolverine* appears to be different. It’s shaping up to be more of a story-driven action-adventure game, similar to the *Uncharted* series. Interestingly, the team behind *Uncharted*, Naughty Dog, is currently working on *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet* and may also be planning a new installment in *The Last of Us* franchise.
With a new *Uncharted* or *Tomb Raider* game still a ways off, *Marvel’s Wolverine* looks like a promising alternative. The trailer featured fast-paced action, including Wolverine running across rooftops and a thrilling motorcycle chase – elements reminiscent of a standout sequence in *Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End*. We also saw Wolverine using his claws to climb a cliff, suggesting the game will include climbing mechanics.
There Will Be Multiple Regions To Explore
From The Wilderness To The City
The trailer clearly shows two scenes that fans familiar with Marvel comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe can easily place. Following the trailer, a short behind-the-scenes feature highlighted three locations players will be able to explore in the game. One of these, Japan, wasn’t shown in the trailer, but it’s a key setting for many of Wolverine’s most popular comic book adventures.
The game’s snowy landscapes were filmed in a remote part of Canada, a location previously used for *X-Men* films and established as Logan’s home. Many of the urban scenes are set in Madripoor, a well-known fictional city within the Marvel universe. One of the most exciting aspects of *Marvel’s Wolverine* is the ability to travel to diverse environments, ensuring the game never feels repetitive. Players are hoping the game will include even more locations, such as Professor Xavier’s school.
Wolverine Sports His Classic Yellow
Among Other Costumes
Even though the original *X-Men* movies aren’t perfect, many people still consider them good superhero films. A common complaint was the all-leather, *Matrixinspired costumes. That’s why fans were so excited to see Wolverine wearing his iconic yellow suit in the 2024 film *Deadpool & Wolverine*. It’s good news for fans that the yellow suit will be back in *Marvel’s Wolverine*.
The trailer shows Wolverine in his classic costume, but he’ll have at least two other looks in the game. We see him wearing plaid with a cowboy hat in the Madripoor scenes, and a leather jacket while in the forest. Considering Insomniac Games included many different suits for Spider-Man and Miles Morales, players are hoping for a similar range of costume options in *Marvel’s Wolverine*. While it’s not confirmed, the different looks we’ve already seen suggest there will be cosmetic variety.
Hitting Familiar Notes
Who Will Show Up Next?
The trailer features several well-known X-Men, including Wolverine and three others. One is Omega Red, who appears to be a main villain battling Wolverine. While not widely known outside of comic books, he’s made appearances in games like *Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes*. Another character shown is Mystique, who is a more familiar face to most fans.
Wolverine’s character has been featured in many *X-Men* films and video games, including *Lego Marvel Super Heroes*. The trailers show Wolverine battling Sentinels, which aren’t individual characters but a common type of enemy the X-Men often fight. It would be exciting if the game *Marvel’s Wolverine* let players climb and fight Sentinels like the epic boss battles in *Shadow of the Colossus*. We can also expect to see other *X-Men* heroes and villains appear in the game.
