Could Saudi Arabia PIF Want Larger Ownership In Nintendo?

As a longtime Nintendo enthusiast who has grown up with iconic characters like Mario and Link, the prospect of the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) increasing its stake in Nintendo sends mixed emotions surging through my veins. On one hand, it’s exciting to think about the potential resources that could be poured into the development of new games and innovative technologies. However, being an old-school gamer, I can’t help but worry about how this might impact the heart and soul of Nintendo’s creations – the creative freedom and passion that has always shone through in their games.

Is there a possibility that the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF) might increase its ownership of Nintendo? It appears they are contemplating such an option.

Recently, during an interview with Kyodo News, I, as a keen follower, was intrigued by Prince Faisal bin Bandar bin Sultan Al-Saud’s comments regarding potential investment in Japanese game companies like Nintendo and others, by the Public Investment Fund (PIF). While he left the door open for such an opportunity, stating that “there’s always a possibility,” it’s essential to note that any move in this direction would require the consent of their strategic partners.

He emphasized the need for maintaining open dialogue, “to ensure we’re on the correct path,” he said to the media outlet. “We prefer a cautious approach, rather than rushing headlong.

The PIF currently owns just under 9% of Nintendo, 8.58% to be exact. The fund also has ownership stake in Nexon, Koei Tecmo, and Capcom.

Lately, Saudi Arabia has teamed up with the International Olympic Committee to sponsor the first-ever Olympic Esports Games, which are set to debut in 2025. This marks the start of a 12-year partnership. Additionally, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) is transferring its stock holdings to Savvy Games Group, a company within the PIF that focuses exclusively on gaming. The leadership of this group is headed by Saudi Arabia’s Prime Minister.
