As a seasoned gamer and avid Marvel Comics fan, I’m excited about the future of the MCU, particularly the upcoming film, The Thunderbolts. Based on the available information, it seems plausible that this film could be adapting the Captain America: Cold War storyline.
The upcoming slate of movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) remains shrouded in secrecy, with scant information disclosed about their respective plots. For instance, “The Thunderbolts” is one of these enigmatic projects. At present, only a small number of characters have been confirmed for this team of morally ambiguous heroes. However, the involvement of figures like Bucky Barnes and the Captain America incarnation known as U.S. Agent could potentially indicate that the film will be inspired by the “Captain America: Cold War” storyline.
In the latest Marvel Comics tale, “Cold War,” Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson, and Bucky Barnes encounter a fresh enigma that deepens the intrigue surrounding their lives. The emergence of a new clandestine organization complicates matters for spies and superheroes alike, pushing them to their limits. The story concludes with Bucky assuming a pivotal role and embarking on a significant assignment, potentially elevating his standing within the Marvel universe. This development could provide fertile ground for the upcoming MCU Thunderbolts film, raising the possibility that it may be inspired by “Captain America: Cold War.”
The Thunderbolts, Explained
To fully grasp this storyline, viewers should have some prior familiarity with the Thunderbolts and their origins. This team was initially formed by Baron Zemo with the intention of reforming the Masters of Evil. However, just as they were about to launch their criminal activities, the powerful mutant villain Onslaught allegedly eliminated both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. Recognizing an opportunity, Zemo and his teammates transformed their public image, positioning themselves as heroes in the eyes of the public. By doing so, they gained access to confidential information previously only accessible to the Avengers and SHIELD.
Before the Avengers and Fantastic Four could carry out their plan, they were confronted by Zemo once again. In an attempt to keep his allies from gaining full hero status, Zemo unveiled the true identity of the Thunderbolts to the public. This revelation triggered a fierce battle, but Zemo managed to escape. Since then, various versions of the Thunderbolts have appeared. The team was first formed by Norman Osborn during the aftermath of the superhero conflict known as “Civil War.” Later, Wilson Fisk created another Thunderbolts team in New York City to apprehend heroes who broke the vigilante laws he established. More recently, Bucky Barnes took on the role of The Revolution, leading a new iteration of the Thunderbolts.
Cold War & The Revolution
As a fan of the captivating dual series, “Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty” and “Captain America: Symbol of Truth,” I was thrilled to witness Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson being pulled into a significant conflict – the tumultuous era of the Cold War. The crux of this intrigue revolved around an enigmatic secret organization called The Outer Circle, which emerged post-World War I with a grand design to shape global events towards their ideal utopia.
The team had a secret weapon in their strategy: assassins known as Starpoints, whom they controlled. They had manipulated Bucky Barnes into becoming the Winter Soldier to use as one of their Starpoints. Additionally, they co-opted Captain America’s iconic shield as their emblem, aiming to provoke him into future clashes. Their plan was successful, but eventually, Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes confronted the group. However, in the ensuing fight, Bucky betrayed Cap by pushing him off their ship after eliminating the Revolution himself, thus becoming a member of the new faction called The New Revolution.
As Steve worked clandestinely with him to thwart AIM and MODOK’s plan to devastate New York City, Sam and Falcon engaged White Wolf, a notorious adversary of Black Panther, in battle. Joining them was Nomad, a trusted ally of Captain America and Ian Rogers, who assumed the role of Captain America in his absence. This confrontation instigated the Cold War, compelling Steve and Sam to penetrate Dimension Z with the goal of rescuing Nomad and halting the Outer Circle.
The New Revolution Brings Back The Thunderbolts
Following the conclusion of the Cold War, Bucky’s identity as The New Revolution enables him to disband the Outer Circle entirely. In doing so, he obtains their vast accumulated resources and intelligence. Collaborating with La Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, they establish a new team, the Thunderbolts, dedicated to defeating the Red Skull once and for all. The roster includes Sharon Carter’s The Destroyer and Red Guardian, as well as Black Widow and White Widow, Shang-Chi, and U.S. Agent. Together, they confront adversaries such as Red Skull, Wilson Fisk, and Doctor Doom throughout the narrative of this formidable team.
The Thunderbolts saga becomes even more intriguing as several of its members are slated to appear in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. Notable characters like Contessa Valentina, White Widow, Red Guardian, U.S. Agent, Ghost from Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Taskmaster from Black Widow’s solo project are all confirmed to be part of this team. Although it’s still uncertain if The Sentry will make an appearance in the movie, a loose adaptation of Cold War could provide an engaging narrative with this collection of heroes and anti-heroes.
