Crazy Ambitious

Summary

  • Larian Studios is focusing on new projects after the final Baldur’s Gate 3 update.
  • Vincke hints at a “crazy ambitious” next project in development.
  • Studio faces challenges with two games in progress, aiming for complexity and player agency.

Swen Vincke, head of Larian Studios, has shared a brief progress report on their upcoming games. Although Larian isn’t quite ready to unveil these projects just yet, this sneak peek serves as an exciting hint that the studio is busy at work, particularly after the successful launch of Baldur’s Gate 3’s Patch 8.

Larian Studios’ latest release, “Baldur’s Gate 3,” has been both critically acclaimed and financially successful. Since its debut, “Baldur’s Gate 3” has repeatedly surpassed sales benchmarks, with Larian regularly introducing new content and fixing issues through game updates. The latest update, Patch 8, introduced features such as Photo Mode and crossplay. Larian has announced that this was the final significant update for “Baldur’s Gate 3,” allowing them to divert their attention towards upcoming projects.

In a conversation with GameSpot, Swen Vincke, the head of Larian Studios, shared that they are currently engrossed in developing their next major undertaking. He emphasized that the upcoming project is showing great promise, although it’s incredibly ambitious due to the numerous innovative elements that can be explored today. Unfortunately, Vincke did not disclose specific details about the project, instead allowing fans to imagine what Larian’s next venture might entail.

Larian’s Swen Vincke Describes Next Project as “Crazy Ambitious”

Vincke further clarified that instead of one, the developer is indeed working on two new games as previously announced last year following the establishment of Larian’s new studio in Warsaw to assist with development. He added, “In addition, we are grappling with how best to handle developing two games simultaneously.” Previously, the team has been transparent about their work on multiple projects, and coordinating themselves for such a task is not without its challenges due to the intricate nature of Larian’s games, which feature numerous player choices and gameplay variations. Predicting the completion dates of these games proves to be difficult given the complexity of Larian’s titles, as demonstrated by the extended development time for Baldur’s Gate 3, which was initially released in Early Access last October.

It seems like Larian Studios’ future projects remain undisclosed for now. Having completed Baldur’s Gate 3, Wizards of the Coast faces the task of choosing a developer for the next game in the franchise, which will surely be measured against Larian’s 2023 project. Wizards of the Coast has indeed confirmed that a sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 is in development, but they are unlikely to rush it out to capitalize on the series’ current popularity.
