Creature Commandos Makes One Pre-DCU Project Canon

Key Takeaways

  • James Gunn’s new projects hint at pre-DCU stories being canon, including The Suicide Squad.
  • Creature Commandos episodes ties Weasel’s fate in The Suicide Squad, confirming canon.
  • The Suicide Squad’s canon status could mean future crossovers in James Gunn’s DC cinematic universe.

As a long-time DC fanatic who has weathered through countless reboots and adaptations, I must say that James Gunn’s recent move to canonize The Suicide Squad within the new DCU is nothing short of exhilarating. It’s like finding a secret stash of Kryptonite in your backyard – unexpected, thrilling, and potentially dangerous!

It’s evident that James Gunn stated his upcoming releases at the end of this year and next mark the start of a fresh slate for the DCU, implying a reboot. However, the series Creature Commandos hinted that not everything was wiped away as thoroughly as initially believed. In fact, it seems there are some projects that were launched prior to the official commencement of the new DCU which now form part of its continuity.

As a devoted fan, I’ve got to say that the previous version of DC Comics adaptations, the DCEU, received a much-needed refresh by many of us. While we had movies like Man of Steel, there were quite a few Black Adams and Wonder Woman 1984s. The connection between these films was sometimes a bit muddled, with some incorporating cameos from other characters and projects, while others seemed to ignore the existence of well-known heroes or villains altogether. The DCU was intended to clear up this confusion, but it seems that James Gunn holds a soft spot for some of those properties. Interestingly, as both the writer and creator of Creature Commandos (and also the head of the DCU), he’s chosen to integrate two of his own properties into the DCU post-facto.

DCEU Pulled Into The DCU In Creature Commandos

As a die-hard fan, I’ve got to say that diving into the new HBO Max series, “Creature Commandos,” has been an exhilarating experience! The opening episodes, which dropped on Thursday, have left no doubt in my mind that “The Suicide Squad” is firmly rooted within the DC Universe. Frank Grillo’s character, Rick Flagg Sr., has been talking about his son, Rick Flagg Jr.’s, demise since the get-go, a character we remember from Joel Kinnaman’s portrayal in “The Suicide Squad.” In that movie, it was Peacemaker who took young Rick down, and now, with these new episodes, it’s official – the events of “The Suicide Squad” are part of DCU canon. And let me tell you, I can hardly wait to see Flagg Sr. seek his revenge when he returns for Season 2 of “Peacemaker!

In addition to the Rick Flagg – Peacemaker connection, another reason “The Suicide Squad” was made canonical involves a character named Weasel from the “Creature Commandos” team. During their initial mission flight, John Cena’s Flagg informs his comrades that Weasel is coming along due to his demonstrated resilience.

Writer James Gunn
Showrunner Dean Lorey
Starring Indira Varma, Sean Gunn, Alan Tudyk, Zoë Chao, David Harbour, Frank Grillo

In the comments, it appears they’re referring to “The Suicide Squad” as if Weasel perished upon landing at Corto Maltese’s coast initially, only for it to be disclosed later in the film that he miraculously survived.

Establishing “The Suicide Squad” as canon doesn’t immediately impact the DC Universe right now, but it does offer insights into why Rick Flagg Sr. harbors a grudge against Peacemaker, which is significant for his upcoming television show. This connection might also spark speculation among fans about whether additional DCEU characters, stars, and narratives could join James Gunn’s evolving DC cinematic universe. There’s even a possibility that further revelations could surface in “Creature Commandos”.
