Crimson Desert started the year as a highly anticipated game, building excitement before its March 19, 2026 release. However, it initially received a mixed reaction from both players and critics. Since then, as developers addressed issues and players adjusted their expectations, opinions about the game have begun to improve.
Player reviews for Crimson Desert on Steam are becoming overwhelmingly positive, with an 86% approval rating. While the game’s story and main character aren’t its strongest points, players are really enjoying the gameplay and the huge amount of things to do in its open world. It seems Crimson Desert is successfully keeping players engaged, as SteamDB shows 146,580 people played the game on April 8, 2026, three weeks after its release.
Crimson Desert Mod Adds Character Creator for Male and Female Kliff
Khione95 created a mod for Crimson Desert, available on Nexus Mods, that lets players fully customize Kliff’s appearance using the in-game barbershop. You can change his hair, face, and even play as a female version of Kliff named Pywell, with a separate mod to adjust his voice accordingly.
This mod is still under development, but it already offers a wide range of character customization options with 98 face presets and 159 hairstyles. The creator, Khione95, intends to add customization for Orc and Goblin characters, and also create a unique animation set for female Kliff characters. Future updates will further improve customization by allowing players to adjust eye color and eyebrows independently from the existing face presets.
If you’re a Crimson Desert player interested in trying this mod, you’ll need to download two things first: the JSON Mod Manager and the Kliff Female Voice pack, which significantly improves the female character’s voice acting. Some players are still puzzled by Pearl Abyss’ choice to use a pre-defined main character, considering how detailed and customizable the character creation system is in Black Desert and how basic Kliff initially feels in Crimson Desert.

Even if Crimson Desert doesn’t get an official character creator, a mod created by Khione95 lets players customize their character, Kliff, beyond what the developers originally planned.
