Despite a mixed reception at launch from players and critics, Crimson Desert has improved its Steam review score to generally positive. Crimson Desert became available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC on March 19th, but many found its story weak, controls awkward, and the sheer amount of content overwhelming, making it not a perfect fit for all gamers.
Despite a year packed with major game releases โ including new installments in popular franchises like Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto, and Forza Horizon โ Crimson Desert has generated significant hype for its ambitious scale, beautiful open world, and incredible variety of gameplay. Even with some controversies, the game still sold over 2 million copies within the first day of its launch.
Crimson Desert Climbs to Mostly Positive On Steam
So, I jumped into Crimson Desert when it launched, and wow, it blew up on Steam! Over 248,000 of us were playing at the same time during the first weekend. Honestly, at first, a lot of players (myself included!) were a bit overwhelmed. There’s so much going on in the game, the controls felt a little awkward, and the story didn’t immediately grab me. But over the weekend, as more people dove in, the reviews started to turn around. Now, it’s sitting at a ‘Mostly Positive’ rating on Steam, with over 20,000 reviews! The Gamer pointed out that about 77% of English reviews are positive, which is pretty awesome considering the rocky start.

Crimson Desert isn’t a game for everyone, as it generally takes about 10 hours to really get into. However, even players who are enjoying the game have pointed out some issues. Today, the developers released a new update designed to fix these problems. Patch 1.00.03 is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, and includes numerous bug fixes and improvements to keyboard and mouse controls.
Players have voiced concerns about the controls in Crimson Desert since its release last week, and Pearl Abyss acknowledges these issues. The recent patch 1.00.03 included some initial fixes, but the developer promises further improvements. In the patch notes, Pearl Abyss stated they will continue refining both controller and keyboard/mouse controls in future updates.
Pearl Abyss recently addressed concerns about their use of AI in the game Crimson Desert. Players quickly spotted a painting within the game that appeared to be AI-generated, and Pearl Abyss confirmed this in a statement. They explained that some 2D artwork was created using AI tools during the early stages of development to help them quickly test different visual styles and atmospheres. However, they apologized to fans and assured them that these AI-created assets were only used for experimentation and wonโt be included in the final, released version of the game.
