For approximately a year and half now, there’s been no news from Charlie Brooker or his production company Zeppotron, since the airing of Black Mirror’s sixth season in June 2023. With the show being known for its thought-provoking and mind-bending storylines, many viewers had started to wonder if they would only see six seasons and a single interactive movie. However, rest assured or brace yourself for more apprehension, as Season 7 of Black Mirror was officially announced last year! Now, fans are getting a sneak peek at Cristin Milioti reprising her role on the USS Callister for what appears to be a follow-up episode set to air in 2025.
Time to Return to the USS Callister, Black Mirror Fans
The idea of revisiting the USS Callister had been circulating since March 2024, but it wasn’t until last September that it was officially confirmed that the cast would return to their roles. This confirmation came along with the release of the official casting roster from Netflix.
It seems that the main characters from season four’s episode are set to reappear: Jesse Plemons as Captain Robert Daly in USS Callister, Cristin Milioti as Nanette Cole, Jimmi Simpson as James Walton, the CEO of Callister, Billy Magnussen as Valdack, and others.
If you’re new to Black Mirror or haven’t seen it in a while, I highly recommend giving “USS Callister” another look. This standout episode showcases the influence of contemporary video games on Brooker’s work. The connection is unmistakable!
The storyline centers around Robert Daly, a brilliant yet reserved video game designer who is behind the creation of the virtual multiplayer game called “Infinity.” This game gives players the ability to pilot a spaceship, mimicking the style of Star Trek in an unmistakable way.
Similar to many Black Mirror stories, there’s a more sinister narrative hidden beneath the surface. In this case, Daly appears to be leading a dual existence within his own game’s universe, having created replicas of his colleagues and slightly altered versions of them for his virtual world. The final twist is a real mind-bender, but it certainly leaves us eager for the upcoming sequel.
Cristin Milioti is a Much Bigger Star Now
In a striking turn of events, Cristin Milioti’s rise to fame coincided perfectly with the arrival of the USS Callister sequel in 2024. This surge in popularity came about as a result of her remarkable portrayal of Sofia Falcone, a role that garnered widespread acclaim following its appearance in the spin-off television series connected to The Batman movie, The Penguin.
As a gamer, I was utterly captivated by Milioti’s portrayal of Ms. Falcone in that series. She seamlessly transitioned from charismatic and charming to chilling psychopathy as the story unfolded. Her acting skills were so exceptional that they earned her a first-time Golden Globe nomination, leaving me in awe of her performance.
Next up, Milioti’s character, Nanette, is expected to take the lead role in the Black Mirror sequel episode following USS Callister. Her character has presumably been commanding the crew of the USS Callister for years within the vast, interactive game environment known as Infinity.
The lingering query is whether her team encounters any difficulties, or if there are hidden, ominous secrets aboard the vessel. In 2025, we’ll uncover these mysteries as season seven of Black Mirror premieres.
