Critical Role Announces New Midst Spinoff: Moonward, Featuring Returning CR Stars

As a long-time fan of tabletop role-playing games and a dedicated viewer of Critical Role, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming spin-off series, Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story. The collaboration between Critical Role and Third Person is a perfect marriage of creative storytelling and unique formats.

Critical Role, the name of both the popular D&D show and its production company, Metapigeon, has made a significant mark in the new media industry. With a dedicated fanbase that matches those of major entertainment giants, last year saw Metapigeon acquire and enhance a captivating space-western series titled “Midst.” Now, Critical Role excitedly introduces “Moonward,” the first spin-off of “Midst.”

One appealing feature of live action play series is their flexibility for innovation. Shows such as Critical Role follow a familiar structure, providing ample opportunities to introduce fresh twists. When Critical Role collaborated with Third Person, the innovative multimedia studio behind podcasts like Midst, they welcomed diverse creative minds capable of continually enhancing the genre. It’s thrilling to witness prominent figures in the community championing its ongoing artistic evolution.

What is Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story?

“Moonward: A Midst Role-Playing Saga” – A New Chapter from the Successful “Midst” Universe

Who is playing in Moonward: A Midst Roleplaying Story?

Xen, a former anonymous player and narrator from the original “Midst” series, will serve as the main guide and narrator for “Moonward.” Similar to “Midst,” “Moonward” is a collaborative narrative where improvisation plays a significant role. Additionally, just like in “Midst,” Xen contributes live music using their electric guitar. In this production, Xen will assume most of the character roles while leaving some key parts for other players. The ensemble of “Moonward” consists of:

  • Marisha Ray as Vesta Sterling: Critical Role’s Creative Director Marisha Ray is one of two classic cast members joining the Third Person crew for Moonward. Fans will remember Marisha Ray as Keyleth of the Air Ashari, Beauregard Lionett, and Laudna from the three central campaigns of Critical Role. Fans may have also heard her voice acting work in games like Fire Emblem Warriors, Friday the 13th: The Game, or Far Cry New Dawn.
  • Liam O’Brien as Walden Orlock: The second Critical Role founder to join the Midst universe is Liam O’Brien. Liam portrayed Vax’ildan, Caleb Widogast, and Orym of the Air Ashari in the beloved actual play series. O’Brien is an almost absurdly prolific voice actor with iconic roles such as Gaara from the Naruto franchise and Akihiko Sanada from Persona 3 under his belt.
  • Matt Roen as Dusty Rivers: Roen is one of three narrators of Midst and Third Person’s other notable series, Blueberries Hill. He and his co-stars remained anonymous until Midst became a co-production with Metapigeon.
  • Sara Wile as Fiona Rue: The third and final member of Third Person. Like Matt and Xen, Sara Wile is better known for her voice than her name. The trio will presumably attain considerably more name recognition after Moonward.

The premiere of “Moonward” is set for August 7th at 7 PM Pacific Time. Subsequent episodes will be released every Wednesday night. viewers can enjoy the series on Critical Role’s YouTube and Twitch channels, Midst’s YouTube channel, or as podcasts from various podcatchers. With Critical Role expanding into new formats, productions like “Moonward” are sure to leave audiences amazed.
