It’s been officially announced that Critical Role is actively developing a video game set in the world of Exandria with a unique twist. At present, there isn’t much information about this project, but fans can expect the team behind Dungeons and Dragons to reveal details about their upcoming video game shortly.

During a chat with Rolling Stone in December 2024, Critical Role CEO Travis Willingham hinted at an upcoming video game project that his company is working on. Although he didn’t make any firm promises, he mentioned they have been exploring the gaming industry and plan to reveal something thrilling towards the end of the year or early in 2025.

As a thrilled Critical Role enthusiast, just a few months ago, I learned that my beloved series was secretly working on a video game project! And now, they’ve hinted at an upcoming official announcement about it. In an interview with Business Insider, Willingham openly spoke of the team’s intense efforts on a game set in the Critical Role universe. Although he didn’t disclose the title or a specific release date, he did mention that an announcement could come any day! Fellow fan Meri excitedly tweeted the relevant passage from the Business Insider article.

Critical Role Plans To Announce a Video Game ‘Any Day’

Apart from sharing a few tantalizing hints about the enigmatic game, Willingham playfully revealed some aspects of it. Among these revelations is the fact that the game will unfold within the realm of Exandria, the setting for the Critical Role campaigns masterminded by Matthew Mercer, who serves as both dungeon master and chief creative officer. He referred to it as the “interactive segment” of the Critical Role universe, implying that players will have a direct influence on the game’s narrative, shaping the story’s outcome not just for their beloved characters, but also for new entities within the world of Exandria. The genre remains undisclosed, but it appears that CR‘s upcoming video game will center around a compelling narrative, include appearances by popular Critical Role characters, and may explore “what if” scenarios related to events within the world, along with original adventures that will enrich the lore of Exandria.

In simpler terms, the milestone of Critical Role’s 10th anniversary, celebrated on March 12, has sparked anticipation for a potential video game announcement. Given that the news might not be far off, fans can expect to learn about their beloved show’s upcoming video game project soon after the Exandria Wrap-Up show, scheduled for March 13.

Players will have a hands-on experience, directly managing the game’s events and shaping the narrative of the story. This includes modifying not only established characters from Exandria, but also introducing fresh elements to the world.

Apart from the current CR announcement that fans are excitedly waiting for, the conclusion of the Bells Hells campaign and the Exandria Unlimited: Divergence mini-campaign has left many wondering about what’s next for Critical Role. Since Campaign 3 ended so abruptly, it remains unclear what the upcoming game will entail – or if Critical Role might opt to use their new TTRPG system, Daggerheart, instead of continuing with Dungeons and Dragons. In the coming weeks, fans can hopefully expect updates regarding Critical Role’s actual play show and video game.
