Good news for Xbox Game Pass subscribers! The popular indie game Hollow Knight is now available on Xbox Series X/S, and those who already own the game can upgrade for free. Originally released in 2017 after a successful Kickstarter campaign, Hollow Knight gained even more popularity through Xbox Game Pass. Developer Team Cherry has continued to support the game, bringing it to multiple platforms and offering all downloadable content for free to existing players.
The strong sales and positive reception of Hollow Knight allowed Team Cherry to begin developing a sequel. Initially planned as a simple expansion, the project grew into a full game, Hollow Knight: Silksong. After a long and quiet development process, Silksong released in 2025 to widespread praise, earning numerous awards and proving to be another financial success for the studio. Despite all this, Team Cherry is now giving both new and returning players a compelling reason to revisit the world of Hallownest.
Team Cherry announced on social media that the original Hollow Knight is now playable on next-gen consoles – PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch. This new version features improved graphics and performance, including higher resolution, smoother frame rates, and enhanced visual effects, thanks to technology developed for Silksong. The best part? If you already own the game on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, or Xbox One, you can upgrade to this version for free.
As a huge fan, I was so excited to hear this deal also applies to us Xbox Game Pass subscribers! Both Hollow Knight and Silksong are on the service, which is amazing. And even better, if you already own the game, or have it through Game Pass, you’ll automatically get the upgrade with all the new features and improvements. It’s a win-win for everyone!
This update follows closely after the announcement of a Hollow Knight version for the Switch 2 during Nintendo’s recent presentation. While the announcement seemed to suggest the update was exclusive to the new console, Team Cherry has confirmed it’s available on all platforms. The studio hinted at this upgrade late last year, explaining they were working to improve the original game to match the quality of Silksong. They didn’t give a specific release date at the time, but said it would include new features and bug fixes.
Image via Team Cherry Now is an excellent time to get into the Hollow Knight series! You can enjoy the original game, which recently received an upgrade, or jump into Silksong, which came out just a few months ago. The developers, Team Cherry, are already planning downloadable content, hinting at a large expansion called the Sea of Sorrow for Hollow Knight Silksong late last year. Like the previous game’s DLC, this expansion will be free for players, and while Team Cherry hasn’t announced a specific release date, they’re aiming for a 2026 launch. Given how long it took to develop Silksong, though, the actual release could be at any time.
