Croc: Legend of the Gobbos is Getting Remastered

As a 90s kid who grew up with the iconic gaming consoles and the legendary platformers that defined that era, I can hardly contain my excitement at the news of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos getting a remaster! This game was one of those hidden gems that I spent countless hours playing on my PlayStation 1, and it’s a trip down memory lane just seeing that trailer.

In a thrilling turn of events, the iconic ’90s platformer game “Croc: Legend of the Gobbos” is being revamped! This revelation was made by Argonaut Games, although they haven’t set a definite release date just yet. As for the platforms it might be released on, we don’t have that info just yet. However, considering its popularity on the original PlayStation, it’s safe to assume that the “Croc: Legend of the Gobbos” remaster will likely appear on the PS5.

Released in 1997 for the PS1, Sega Saturn, and PC, the game “Croc: Legend of the Gobbos” is similar to the renowned “Spyro the Dragon.” In this 3D platformer, players guide Croc, a baby crocodile, through various levels filled with unique platforming challenges. The objective is not only to navigate these stages but also to collect gems as you progress on your mission to save a group of cute creatures called Gobbos from the clutches of the villainous Baron Dante.

A developer named Argonaut Games has shared a gameplay trailer on their YouTube channel. The trailer offers glimpses of Croc, the main character, maneuvering around hurdles and establishing the storyline. In the clip, Croc is seen battling different adversaries like a massive worm and an oversized boxing ladybug, all while delving into levels and amassing collectibles similar to the 1998 N64 game Banjo-Kazooie.

Croc: Legend of the Gobbos Gets New Life on Modern Consoles

In 1982, Argonaut Games started humbly as a small game development studio. They rose to fame by creating the original ‘Star Fox’ for the Super Nintendo. Following this success, they ventured into the PlayStation and Sega Saturn markets with the ‘Croc’ series. Unfortunately, the company faced financial difficulties and went out of business in 2007 after a prolonged period of liquidation. However, it reemerged from dormancy in a strong comeback, announcing plans for a remastered version of ‘Croc’.

The upcoming re-release of the game Croc is uncertain about what enhancements it may offer, as the trailer doesn’t provide details on possible graphic upgrades or new elements to expect. However, it seems like a more subdued remaster rather than a complete overhaul similar to the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, which could be fitting for a developer returning from 17 years of obscurity.

The original game “Croc: Legend of the Gobbos” was followed by another installment in 1999, titled “Croc 2”. This second game continued the series along similar lines with its platform-style gameplay and a narrative that echoed the first. Notably, “Croc 2” was initially exclusive to the PlayStation 1 console, although it had a distinctly different port for Game Boy. However, there are currently no plans known for remastering the sequel.
