In a shift reflecting the growing trend towards digital media, “Cronos: The New Dawn” is set to debut physically on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. However, it’s important to note that only the PlayStation 5 version will come preloaded with game data. As the gaming industry evolves, an increasing number of developers are opting out of physical launches altogether or limiting them to specific platforms, as demonstrated by “Cronos: The New Dawn”.
After the tremendous success of Silent Hill 2 in 2024, Bloober Team emerged as a notable force in horror gaming development. The remake sold over a million copies within its first three days, marking a significant achievement for Konami’s franchise in ten years. Building upon this legacy of horror games like Layers of Fear and Observer, the Polish studio announced their upcoming third-person survival horror game, Cronos: The New Dawn, in November 2024. During the latest Nintendo Direct, it was officially confirmed that this game will be released on September 5, 2025.
Cronos: The New Dawn to Only Get a True Physical Release on PS5
Beyond becoming available digitally on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles, the game Cronos: The New Dawn will also offer physical editions for PS5 and Switch 2. Interestingly, it has been confirmed that only the PS5 version will receive a traditional physical release, where the game is actually on the disc. For the Switch 2, the physical edition will be in the form of a Game-Key card, essentially a cartridge housing only the license for the purchased game and not the game data itself. Regrettably, there are no plans for any physical launch of the sci-fi shooter on Xbox. Both physical editions come with additional in-game content as well as stickers. Pre-orders for all versions of the game are currently available at various retailers.
As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but notice the trend in the gaming industry shifting towards a more digital-centric future. For instance, Bloober Team’s decision to focus on the Game-Key card for Nintendo Switch 2, and not bother with a physical release on Xbox, is a clear sign of this shift. While some developers still offer full physical releases on PlayStation, it seems that Xbox ports often come with incomplete game data, necessitating additional downloads before you can even start playing.
This trend becomes particularly challenging for collectors who prefer physical copies, like myself, as the emergence of Nintendo’s Game-Key cards this generation has made life tougher. It will be intriguing to see if any potential new Switch 2 card storage sizes could change this situation in the future.
Apart from “Cronos: The New Dawn,” another significant horror game is set to debut in September – Konami’s long-awaited “Silent Hill” title. This highly anticipated release seems to be a fitting conclusion for what promises to be an exceptional month for horror genre enthusiasts, as it’s scheduled to hit the shelves on September 25th.
