Crytek has revealed that the primary distinction between Far Cry and Crysis lies in the unique methods employed to construct their game worlds. Both Far Cry and Crysis, early releases from Crytek, received both critical acclaim and commercial success.
Prior to Ubisoft acquiring the Far Cry intellectual property in 2006, it had been the creation of German studio Crytek. They were responsible for developing the initial entry of this widely popular franchise, which was not only their inaugural project but also their first significant success. In 2007, they released another successful original game titled Crysis, which would later have several successful sequels. Despite both games being first-person shooters set in a jungle, there are distinct differences that make them unique, one of which the Crytek developers recently discussed.
In their latest video on YouTube, Crytek shared insights into their past phases, highlighting key moments such as their hit game, Crysis, which continues to be a top choice even after nearly 20 years. Compared to their second major success, Far Cry, Crytek Art Director Marcel Schaika pointed out that the primary distinction lay in the way each game’s jungle setting was designed. He elaborated that while the art team for Far Cry constructed a natural environment based on their imagination, the artists working on Crysis aimed to replicate nature as accurately as possible. Schaika, who worked on 3D art for the 2007 sci-fi game, emphasized that this contrast in approaches had a significant impact, even though both games utilized similar technologies in certain aspects.
Crytek Talks About How Crysis Did Things Differently Compared to Far Cry

Tom Deerberg, the lead 3D artist on Crysis, revealed a method the team employed when creating the game’s virtual environment. Essentially, artists and level designers took a real-life trip to a tropical island, drawing inspiration from this location and taking numerous photographs. These resources aided them in grasping the intended aesthetic for the game’s backdrop more effectively. Furthermore, he noted that the field excursion significantly improved the quality and visual harmony found within Crysis.
It’s interesting to point out that many game developers often visit actual locations before designing comparable in-game landscapes, particularly for large-scale games. For example, Rockstar Games has a reputation for exploring relevant sites during the development of their Grand Theft Auto series, which feature fictionalized representations of real cities.
As Ubisoft works on the next addition to the popular “Far Cry” series, it’s regrettably uncertain when we can expect a new “Crysis” game. In February 2025, Crytek halted development on “Crysis 4,” even going so far as to lay off staff, which has raised concerns about the future of this franchise.
