Summary

  • Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel, codenamed “Project Orion,” has entered pre-production.
  • The new sequel may take place in a new setting described as “Chicago gone wrong.”
  • CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2 is in development, with 96 staff members currently assigned to it.

CD Projekt Red has officially begun early development on the follow-up to Cyberpunk 2077. Initially launched in 2020, the game experienced numerous game-breaking bugs and glitches that marred its sci-fi RPG reputation. However, CDPR persistently worked to rectify the situation through multiple fixes and updates. The pinnacle of this effort was the Phantom Liberty DLC in 2023. By the time these improvements were complete, Cyberpunk 2077 transformed from one of the most critically panned games of recent times to a breakout hit. Now, fans are eagerly anticipating a sequel.

It was officially announced by CD Projekt Red in October 2022 that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, tentatively named “Project Orion,” is under development. While specific details about the game have not been disclosed yet, it’s known that unlike its predecessor, which was developed using REDengine, Project Orion will be built on Unreal Engine 5. Additionally, Mike Pondsmith, creator of the Cyberpunk tabletop gaming franchise, has hinted that the sequel may depart from Night City and focus on a new setting described as “Chicago gone wrong.

According to a report by IGN, CD Projekt Red has officially begun the pre-production phase of what was previously known as Project Orion, now titled Cyberpunk 2. As stated in their latest financial report, the conceptual stage for this project concluded weeks ago and it’s now advancing further. Essentially, during pre-production, ideas are fully developed, playable prototypes are created, and team members are assigned to work on the project. However, since this process takes several years, fans should not anticipate seeing much more of Cyberpunk 2 in action for some time.

Cyberpunk 2 Enters Pre-Production

CD Projekt Red (CDPR) reveals that out of its 730 team members, approximately 14% are currently dedicated to developing Cyberpunk 2, leaving the remaining staff likely engaged with The Witcher 4 or other ongoing projects at CDPR. Beyond these two anticipated games, CDPR is also working on a remake of the original Witcher game, a multiplayer title within the Witcher universe, and a completely new intellectual property (IP).

It’s clear that fans will have to be patient before they can play Cyberpunk 2, but at least they now know the game’s official title and have a sense of its development progress. Meanwhile, the gaming community eagerly anticipates further updates about Cyberpunk 2. In the meantime, the original Cyberpunk 2077 is set to be released on the Nintendo Switch 2, and a new Cyberpunk animated project is in the works at Netflix following the success of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners in 2022.
