The following contains minor story spoilers for Cyberpunk 2077.
After the debut of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red has spent several years re-establishing trust. From addressing performance issues to revamping systems and introducing the game-changing Phantom Liberty expansion, the developer has transformed a rocky launch into a successful comeback. Amidst all the excitement about cars, abilities, and conclusions, however, two characters – River Ward and Kerry Eurodyne – find themselves in a state of suspension.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always cherished the intriguing characters introduced in Cyberpunk 2077, particularly Judy and Panam, who played significant roles in my journey through Night City. However, after their initial storylines concluded, they seemed to take a backseat, leaving us yearning for more. But now, with rumors of update 2.4 on the horizon and Virtuos collaborating with CD Projekt Red, there’s a tantalizing opportunity to delve deeper into these characters’ narratives. It’s not just about refining the surface details; it’s about giving Judy and Panam the rich, engaging storylines they deserve that have been long overdue.
Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.4 Could Fix River

As a gamer, diving into the gritty world of Cyberpunk 2077, I’ve got to say that the character River Ward truly left an impression on me. His storyline was a captivating journey where we worked together to unmask a serial kidnapper, and if V is female, there’s even the chance for romance. However, after that gripping mission, River seems to fade into the background. He doesn’t influence the game’s ending, there are no further interactions with him, and he’s barely mentioned in any significant narrative events following his final quest.
The updates to Cyberpunk’s romances have been fantastic, but it feels like there’s room for more development when it comes to River. He’s a character with potential that hasn’t quite been fully realized yet.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the silence is more than just disappointing; it leaves me feeling incomplete. The character development of River in Cyberpunk 2077 has set him up as a complex figure, wrestling with loyalty towards a flawed system and his deep-rooted emotions for those he cares about. His narrative cries out for a continuation, and with the arrival of update 2.4, developers could bring River back into the game through an exciting new series of Cyberpunk 2077 missions focused on NCPD corruption, community protection, or even a captivating exploration of his post-resignation struggles.
Compared to characters like Panam and Judy who have extensive storylines, River’s narrative is significantly more concise. He only features in a limited number of side quests, and following the completion of “Following the River,” there are few, if any, subsequent interactions with him for players.
Extending the focus on River in Night City for a while could lend a deeper emotional impact to the game’s law enforcement narrative, which can sometimes get overshadowed by the main quest’s action. A subsequent story that delves into River’s character could offer a more grounded and personal contrast to the grandiose stories of other companions.
Kerry Could Finally Step Out Of Johnny’s Shadow

In “Cyberpunk 2077,” character Kerry Eurodyne shares a past with Johnny Silverhand as a former bandmate, which leads him to be drawn into the main storyline involuntarily. Compared to River, Eurodyne is more flamboyant and provides extended screen time; however, his narrative arc abruptly finishes at an intriguing point. For players who choose to romance Kerry, there’s a climactic mission that feels significant, but it lacks resolution, introspection, or suggestions for future intentions. Similarly to River (and other romantic options), Eurodyne has received small bits of romantic development, but could benefit from further expansion.
Here’s where Virtuos can come into play. If there are new projects on the horizon, Kerry might find himself in a storyline delving into his stardom, the intricate bond he shares with Johnny Silverhand’s legacy, or perhaps a narrative heavily focused on music. For instance, he could be depicted organizing a global tour, or handling the political complexities of celebrity life within Night City. Such a development could prove both innovative and consistent with the overall mood.

In the Star conclusion, Kerry decides against departing Night City alongside V, despite their romantic relationship. This sets him apart from most companions, as he opts to remain in the city, a decision that underscores his strong connections to it and suggests an incomplete narrative thread for his character.
Utilizing the existing technological and storytelling resources, Virtuos can develop a fresh set of character missions centered around Kerry’s development. These missions wouldn’t necessarily be linked to V’s ending, but rather function as standalone post-game content that offers players another chance to interact with cherished companions while enriching the emotional depth of the game world.
Virtuos Could Push Cyberpunk 2077 Even Further

The surprising revelation is that CD Projekt Red has collaborated with Virtuos to carry on the game’s development, contrary to previous indications from the studio following the release of Phantom Liberty suggesting the story had concluded. However, update 2.4 suggests there’s yet more narrative to be explored.
Prior to now, Virtuos has been involved in numerous high-quality game titles, earning a well-deserved reputation for thoughtfully enhancing existing game content.

Enhancing the game with additional quests, vehicles, or refinements is commendable, but what truly sets Cyberpunk 2077 apart now is the opportunity to rectify one of its persistent issues. By providing substantial content for underdeveloped characters such as River and Kerry, the game can leave a more lasting impact than yet another shiny car or weapon upgrade. Furthermore, reintroducing these characters would not only enrich the experience but also honor a pledge made in 2020: that every resident of Cyberpunk 2077‘s Night City matters, long after the credits have rolled.
