Thanks to a dedicated fan, you can now play Cyberpunk 2077 with a filter that makes it look like an old VHS tape. While the game is known for its cutting-edge graphics, some players are enjoying a retro aesthetic, as if it were an older game.
When Cyberpunk 2077 first launched, it was plagued with problems. However, CD Projekt Red worked hard to fix those issues over the following years, ultimately transforming the game into a highly enjoyable experience. A dedicated community of modders also formed around the game, constantly releasing new content and improvements – everything from graphical updates to gameplay tweaks. Because Cyberpunk 2077 already looked good, many modders focused on completely overhauling its visual style, and the VHS mod is a great example of this kind of work.
Cyberpunk 2077 VHS Mod Turns It Into a True Retro Experience, Warts and All
TapePunk is a custom visual setting created by Tuliz for the game Cyberpunk 2077, designed to make the game look like an old VHS recording. Originally released in January 2026, it’s been continually improved, resulting in a surprisingly realistic and nostalgic visual experience. Unlike some modders who focus on adding new items or features (like the popular flashlight mod for Cyberpunk 2077), Tuliz completely reimagines the game’s graphics. They describe TapePunk as a way to create a cinematic, retro feel, inspired by the look and feel of actual VHS tapes and our memories of them.
TapePunk includes a warning that its visual style, which mimics the look of old camcorder and VHS tapes, might cause motion sickness for some players. While it can be used on its own, players who have Emry’s Cytropolis 2.0 or the Dreampunk mod can integrate it further into those mods. These mods are much more complex than simple additions, like the third-person mod for Cyberpunk 2077. Dreampunk, especially, makes Cyberpunk 2077 look incredibly realistic, and combining it with TapePunk should create a stunning visual experience.
If you’re looking for a reason to jump back into Cyberpunk 2077, the TapePunk mod might be it. While intentionally reducing the game’s graphics to look like an old VHS tape might seem like a strange use of your computer’s power, the mod is undeniably appealing. The creator, Tuliz, has avoided overly flashy effects, instead focusing on details like sharpening flaws, color distortion, lens imperfections, and color bleeding. This makes TapePunk a surprisingly subtle and well-crafted project.

If you’re not planning on modifying Cyberpunk 2077, you’ll likely be waiting a while for new content from CD Projekt Red. Keanu Reeves has expressed interest in a Cyberpunk 2 game, suggesting the story isn’t finished yet. It will be interesting to see if CD Projekt Red continues the story directly from Cyberpunk 2077 in the next game, or if they take the narrative in a completely new direction. Either way, there’s a clear demand from players for more of the Cyberpunk universe.
