As a huge fan of Cyberpunk 2077, I was so excited to hear the lead writer confirm something we’ve all suspected for ages! Apparently, the team always intended for Night City itself to be the real villain of the story – it wasn’t just a setting, but an active antagonist. It’s cool to know that fan theory was actually part of their original vision.
Night City is the heart of Cyberpunk 2077, offering a huge and immersive open world to explore. But it’s more than just a location – it’s a powerful force that lures people in with promises, only to deliver harsh consequences. A key writer for the game has now confirmed that Night City itself is the primary antagonist.
It’s Always ‘Night City Versus Everyone Else’ in Cyberpunk 2077
Players have long suspected that Night City itself is the central conflict in Cyberpunk 2077, and a recent post on the r/cyberpunkgame subreddit dives into this idea. According to Tomasz Marchewka, the game’s lead writer, the development team realized early on that Night City would function as the primary antagonist.
Marchewka noted that some players understood the game’s mechanics quickly and wanted to know why. The game includes several enemies, like Arasaka and Adam Smasher, but the core idea is that Night City itself is the biggest challenge. As the lead writer put it, it’s always been ‘Night City versus everyone,’ even the powerful factions, which makes the city a compelling antagonist.
As the cinematic director, Igor Sarzynski, explained it, what really makes this game’s world so captivating is finding that sweet spot between really human, emotional moments – the stuff that feels fragile and makes you care – and the danger and violence. It’s about balancing those two sides, and for me, that’s what pulls you in.
According to Sarzynski, Night City is a place where you constantly have to defend yourself, whether physically or emotionally. It’s a city of extremes – beautiful and dangerous – which keeps you on edge and hopeful that something good might happen next.
The next Cyberpunk game will be set in a city inspired by a dark and twisted version of Chicago. Also, CD Projekt Red and WierdCo just announced a Cyberpunk trading card game.
