The creative director of Cyberpunk 2 explained why using a first-person viewpoint enhances the game’s story, setting, and overall genre experience in 2077.
Okay, so a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is definitely happening, but we’re going to be waiting a while for it. CD Projekt Red is working on the new Witcher game first, and they’ve said that won’t even be out until after 2026. They’ve confirmed the Cyberpunk sequel is in development, but it’s realistically four or five years away, at the very least. While we’re all patiently waiting, it’s interesting to look back and see why they didn’t include a third-person perspective in the first Cyberpunk 2077!
Third Person is Better for Games Like God of War, The Witcher, and More; First Person is Better Suited to Cyberpunk 2077
GamesRadar+ noticed a recent discussion on Bluesky where Cyberpunk 2077’s creative director, Igor Sarzynski, explained why the game is played from a first-person perspective. He believes it best supports the game’s story, genre, and world, allowing players to truly feel like they’re inhabiting a character whose only escape from a failing body is through technology and their own consciousness.
Additionally, the game features a digital ghost that only the player can see and experience, existing solely within their own mind. Sarzynski believes a third-person view works better for games with strong, established characters – like Geralt, Kratos, or Ellie – because players are essentially reliving someone else’s story.
Just chatted with Sarzynski, and he made it super clear this talk is only about the story in Cyberpunk 2077 – nothing to do with what they’re planning for Cyberpunk 2. He even jokingly said the sequel could be anything – like a Play-Doh stop-motion RTS! He’s definitely messing with the fans, but it’s good to know this conversation isn’t hinting at anything about the next game.
The creator of the Cyberpunk world has revealed that the next game will be set in a city inspired by a distorted version of Chicago. Plus, a writer from the first game has confirmed a popular fan theory! We’re curious to hear your thoughts on why the developers chose a first-person perspective for Cyberpunk 2077 – share them in the comments below.
