Daeron’s Dragon & Its Importance In House Of The Dragon, Explained

Daeron's Dragon & Its Importance In House Of The Dragon, Explained

As a hardcore Game of Thrones enthusiast who has spent countless hours poring over the lore and theories about the Targaryen dynasty, I can confidently say that the upcoming season of House of the Dragon promises to be a dragon’s feast for fans like me.

In the world of House of the Dragon, the Greens possess the largest dragon known, yet they strive for equilibrium with Queen Rhaenyra, who is mobilizing an Army of Bastards on Dragonstone. Rhaenyra counteracts Vhagar, one of her dragons, with a group consisting of Syrax, Vermithor, Silverwing, Seasmoke, and possibly Sheepstealer. The outcome for Vhagar and Aemond may be unfavorable if Helaena and Daeron, the remaining Green Dragonriders, do not support them in their struggle.

At Rook’s Rest, Aemond rashly harmed his brother, King Aegon II, and Sunfyre, his own dragon, driven by imprudence and greed for the Iron Throne. His hasty, unplanned actions led to the loss of a dragon and a Dragonrider from the Greens’ side. Now, Aegon II is healing in House of the Dragon, leaving Aemond isolated and in need of support from Daeron and his dragon.

Daeron Targaryen’s Dragon In House of the Dragon

Daeron's Dragon & Its Importance In House Of The Dragon, Explained

In the series “House of the Dragon”, Otto Hightower casually mentions Daeron’s dragon, but it was actually Daemon Targaryen in Season 1 who first confirmed their existence within the show’s continuity. When asked about the number of dragons, Daemon remarks, “I make it three grown ones.” He then suggests that Dragonstone has thirteen to their four, a statement which is accurate as Alicent and King Viserys’ children each possess adult dragons (Vhagar being the largest), while Daeron’s dragon is on the verge of maturity.

In the Green faction’s encampment reside four dragons: Vhagar, Sunfyre, Dreamfyre, and Tessarion. Since the conclusion of “House of the Dragon” Season 1, Vhagar has been pursuing the Black dragons and their riders relentlessly. She has already eliminated Lucerys and Arrax, as well as Rhaenys and Meleys from play. In obedience to Aemond’s orders, Vhagar unleashed flames at both Sunfyre and Aegon during the events at Rook’s Rest. As a result, Sunfyre suffered wing injuries and plummeted into the neighboring forest. The fate of Dreamfyre under Helaena’s care remains uncertain; the show is yet to reveal their future.

Instead of Daeron, however, it’s worth noting that Daeron possesses a dragon, as per Lord Jasper Wylde’s words. This dragon, it seems, is eager for battle. Lord Jasper suggests that if necessary, Daeron could unleash his female dragon over the Riverlands to quell the rebellion in the region.

Additionally, your brother Daeron’s dragon has reached maturity for combat. Summon the Hightower forces, Daeron, and Tessarion to quell the unrest in the Riverlands.

As a gamer, I too have undergone rigorous combat training, much like Gwayne Hightower describes. And just as Otto had accurately foreseen, I stand ready to prove myself an invaluable asset to the Greens.

Is Tessarion In House of the Dragon?

In the second-to-last episode, during a council meeting led by Prince Regent Aemond Targaryen, the series “House of the Dragon” mentioned Tessarion. It was announced with delight that Wylde had successfully gotten Tessarion airborne and it was now ready for deployment in warfare.

The meeting was suddenly disrupted as Ulf and Silverwing soared above King’s Landing. Aemond gave pursuit, but halted his chase upon spotting Rhaenyra enclosed by a swarm of Dragonseed soldiers.

On a more positive note, it appears that Prince Daeron’s dragon, Tessarion, has finally learned to fly! You can expect your brother to join the battlefield shortly.

Apart from Dreamfyre, Tessarion – a young, blue-hued female dragon – is the sole dragon available to the Greens. With the conflict intensifying, Aemond finds himself depending on his sister’s aid. This description of Tessarion comes from the tales of ‘Fire & Blood’.

Born outside the Red Keep’s influence and overshadowed by his siblings, Daeron initially plays a minor part in the early stages of the Dance of the Dragons. However, upon his dragon’s emergence, he gains prominence, using Tessarion to assist Ormund Hightower’s forces at the Honeywine River in the Reach. In this battle, he wages a two-front war against opponents backing the Blacks, cutting through a formidable Northern force led by House Rowan’s Lord Thaddeus and Tom Flowers, also known as the Bastard of Bitterbridge. This Northern force, though strong, is comparable to the Hightower forces, while the Southern forces consist of House Beesbury under Ser Alan Beesbury, House Tarly under Lord Alan Tarly, and House Costayne under Lord Owen Costayne.

In a surprising turn of events, the Greens emerged victorious in the Battle of Honeywine, defying the odds stacked against them. Just when all seemed lost, Daeron and Tessarion appeared on the scene, turning the tide and routing the enemy forces. Thaddeus Rowan led a hasty retreat to the north with the remnants of his men, while Jon Roxton inflicted a grievous wound upon Lord Owen Costayne using his Valyrian steel sword Orphan-Maker. Alan Tarly and Alan Beesbury were captured in the fray, and Lord Ormund Hightower bestowed knighthood upon Daeron with his own Valyrian steel sword Vigilance, praising him as “Daeron the Daring.”

In the initial skirmish of Tumbleton, Tessarion engages in combat. She finds liberation. Roaming above the town and preying upon game becomes her newfound freedom. One of the traitors, Hugh, proclaims himself as a potential ruler, using his dragon Vermithor’s third part, Tessarion, to support his claim. A brief interval later, Addam of Hull, who had since been recognized as a Velaryon, orchestrates a surprise attack on the Hightower army at night, inciting the Second Battle of Tumbleton. Daeron succumbs swiftly during the battle, while Tessarion valiantly fights Seasmoke and Addam. Vermithor later joins them in combat, leading to all three dragons’ demise. As Tessarion attempts flight afterwards, she falters. The following day, Billy Burley, under orders from Benjicot Blackwood, grants her a merciful end by shooting her thrice in the eye. She breathes her last moments later.
