heads up: what follows may reveal significant plot points from the Dandadan comic book series and animated show, both of which can be found on Crunchyroll.
It has been noted that imitation is the most heartfelt form of flattery, so it seems that Dandadan season 2 plans to pay tribute to another widely acclaimed anime: Ranma 1/2. If you’re a fan of Dandadan‘s outlandish and unpredictable storylines, plots, rules, and references, then the second season will not disappoint as it delves into a parody of Ranma 1/2. The tribute won’t be understated either, as one character is set to transform upon contact with cold water and revert back to their normal form after touching hot water.
Besides “Ranma 1/2,” you can anticipate other spoofs, such as a spirit medium collective that bears an uncanny resemblance to the Japanese rock band, X Japan. Furthermore, expect some irate spirits transforming into classical musicians like Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach. However, it’s important to note that the “Dandadan” anime may have altered the likeness of real-life individuals’ faces before, likely due to permission issues. For instance, the actor Ken Takakura’s face is depicted in one scene in the manga but entirely absent in the same scene in the anime.
Jiji’s Evil Eye Transformation Will Rely on Cold and Hot Water
Just Like a Certain Martial Artist
Momo Ayase’s old crush, Jiji, is set for a transformation akin to Okarun and Aira’s yokai forms in the next season of Dandadan. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, I suggest you check it out! The transformation results in white hair, yellow eyes, and a prominent third eye in the middle of his forehead. However, the trailer doesn’t reveal what causes Jiji’s transformation; but for those who are familiar with Ranma 1/2, it appears to be following a similar pattern. Just like Ranma Saotome and other cursed characters from the show, Jiji will transform based on the temperature of water he encounters, changing back to his original form when conditions change.
The significance of Jiji’s transformation isn’t revealed until the second part of the season, but it all starts in the “Cursed House Arc”, which is where season 2 kicks off. This transformation happens instantly when he accepts the Evil Eye into his body and remains that way until he gets knocked out. The subsequent “Evil Eye Arc” delves deeper into Jiji’s transformation and abilities. At this point, Jiji hasn’t mastered his powers yet, so Momo, Okarun, and Aira must always carry hot water with them to prevent any unwanted transformations. In true Dandadan style, these precautions lead to a series of amusing, yet potentially hazardous, situations that can sometimes be quite emotional too.
The Similarity Between the Origins of Jiji and Ranma’s Transformations
In an extraordinary twist of fate, I stumbled upon a forbidden lake where a young girl met her untimely end – and that’s how I inherited my peculiar condition. Meanwhile, the enigmatic Jiji’s powers were born from a house steeped in dark rituals, where human sacrifices took place. The Evil Eye yokai, the restless spirit of one of those victims, imbued this humble abode with its eerie presence. Both our transformations trace back to places shrouded in sorrow and loss. While the world of Ranma 1/2 maintains a playful vibe, the haunting allure of Dandadan is a chilling reminder of these tragic origins.
The Difference Between Jiji and Ranma’s Transformations
Other than Jiji Not Turning Into a Girl, of Course
In contrast to Ranma, Jiji undergoes a more comprehensive transformation than just a change in physical appearance when triggered by the Evil Eye. Unlike Ranma who retains his original mind during transformation, Jiji’s personality is taken over completely by the yokai during transformation, making him essentially a different being – at least initially, as the story arc involving the Evil Eye revolves around Jiji regaining control of his body.
In contrast to Ranma, Jiji’s transformations aren’t confined to water alone. Instead, contact with any type of liquid can cause a change in Jiji. This includes everyday items like soy sauce, juice, or ink. Unfortunately, when this happens, the usually lovable Jiji morphs into a menacing yokai, bent on eliminating humanity. Moreover, Jiji’s transformations are more delicate than Ranma’s. Even minor incidents such as drinking cold water or being exposed to his own sweat can activate his Evil Eye transformation, making it challenging for him to keep his transformed state under control.
Be careful, Jiji. Remember to wash your hands regularly, drink plenty of water, and go outside when it rains. Even the slightest contact with cold water could cause you to change form.” – Seiko Ayase to Jiji (This version retains the original meaning while making it easier for a wider audience to understand)
Jiji’s Powers in Evil Eye Mode
Grudge Construction
In contrast to Ranma, when Jiji transforms into his Evil Eye form, he gains extraordinary strength, speed, and resilience, making him capable of battling both yokai and extraterrestrial beings. It’s common for individuals with yokai powers, such as Okarun and Aira, to possess these enhanced physical abilities naturally. Furthermore, each yokai user has a unique power, just like how Okarun exhibits incredible speed and Aira can manipulate her hair. Jiji’s special ability is the creation of grudge constructs using the resentment of the Kito Family’s human sacrifice victims, much like the Red Lanterns from DC who manifest physical structures using hatred.
Jiji has the ability to mold his resentments into whatever form he desires, yet there are certain structures he frequently employs. One such structure is the Cursed Manor, a construct designed as a house where Jiji can either safeguard himself and others or imprison them. This manor is difficult to breach, with Jiji being the only one who can easily enter and exit it at will.
In a unique twist, Jiji’s signature move is the Anger Sphere, where he concentrates his accumulated grudges into a ball roughly the size of a soccer or football. He can then propel this Anger Sphere towards his adversary with a powerful kick. Remarkably, if the enemy manages to avoid it, the sphere will simply bounce off whatever it collides with and relentlessly pursue the enemy again. This move shares some resemblance with Yamcha’s Spirit Ball from Dragon Ball, a ball of discomfort that persistently attacks its target until its creator decides to stop. Interestingly, Jiji has the ability to concurrently create multiple Anger Spheres, all of which bounce off surfaces and repeatedly strike his opponent. While engaged in melee combat, Jiji can also physically engage these spheres.
