Even with all the killing happening in *Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair*, players can still build relationships with the characters. As Hajime Hinata, you can spend free time getting to know your classmates – as long as they’ve survived, of course.
Okay, so hanging out with my classmates and watching what they do in their free time actually gets me these things called Hope Fragments. They’re kinda important because they unlock helpful bonuses during the class trials. But it’s not always easy getting people to talk to me! Just being there isn’t enough. I’ve realized I need to give the right gifts at the right moments to really build relationships and get to know everyone better.
The recent announcement has generated a lot of excitement among fans, with many revisiting the games to prepare for the upcoming release. Whether you’re new to the game or a returning player, here’s a breakdown of the gift system, how to connect with other players, and the benefits of building friendships in the game.
Where & How To Get Presents
In *Danganronpa 2*, you can buy gifts for your classmates in two ways. One option offers a small, reliable selection, while the other has a much wider variety, but depends on chance.
The MonoMono Yachine
Similar to the first game, *Danganronpa 2* features a fun capsule toy machine game. Players can spend Monocoins to get a gift for one of their classmates. You’ll find the machine, called the MonoMono Yachine, on the beach of the first island.
Adding extra coins makes it less likely you’ll get a gift you’ve already given. But it’s okay to give the same gift more than once! Many students share the same favorite gifts, and characters are happy to receive anything. Usually, using just one coin is enough to get a gift someone will appreciate, so there’s no need to spend more.
The Vending Machine

Players can find a vending machine in Rocketpunch Market on the first island. Hajime can buy snacks, drinks, and other inexpensive items using Monocoins. Even though these items are cheap, his classmates will appreciate a small gift like ramune or sunflower seeds.
The vending machine offers extra items for 50 Monocoins that unlock bonus scenes. But if you’re trying to become friends with your classmates, these items aren’t worth buying – they can’t be given as gifts.
Where to Find Monocoins
You’ll earn Monocoins after each class trial based on how well you do in the minigames. You can also discover them hidden around the island by carefully examining objects. The best way to find them? Check everything you see!
Liked vs. Loved Gifts

When Hajime first meets a friend, giving them gifts they *like* is a good way to start building your relationship, and will earn you the first couple of Hope Fragments. After that, you’ll need to give them gifts they *love* to collect the remaining Hope Fragments.
Gifts are generally categorized as Liked, Loved, Neutral, Disliked, or Hated. However, you really only need to focus on the Liked and Loved gifts. Giving a character anything outside of those categories won’t improve your relationship with them, so it’s best to stick to what they enjoy!
Why Give Presents?

The gift-giving system in *Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair* might seem pointless at first. Since the game has a fixed story, your relationships with other characters don’t change the plot. But giving gifts *does* have a purpose beyond just developing friendships and the game’s world. By collecting Hope Fragments, you can unlock skills to help you in the class trials. Getting a student’s fifth Hope Fragment unlocks a unique skill with a special effect.
In the game, getting to know your classmates better can unlock helpful abilities. While all classmates offer useful skills, some will be more valuable to certain players depending on which minigames they struggle with during the Class Trials. Here’s a list of the skills you can unlock by building friendships with classmates in *Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair*:
Classmate | Skill | Effect |
---|---|---|
Akane Owari | Peach Muscle | Increases rate of fire for Truth Bullets. |
Byakuya Togami | Sting | Increases the number of Monocoins earned. |
Chiaki Nanami | Cheat Code | The time limit in Nonstop Debates does not decrease. |
Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu | Silver Spoon | When Hajime misses or answers incorrectly, the damage he takes is reduced. |
Gundham Tanaka | Infinity Unlimited Flame | Shooting down White Noise in Nonstop Debates becomes easier. |
Hiyoko Saionji | Pivot Turn | During the Closing Argument, any panels that do not fit into the narrative will be erased. |
Ibuki Mioda | Shred Guitar | Increases acceleration speed during Logic Dive. |
Kazuichi Soda | Handiwork | The player can reload two bullets at once during Panic Talk Action |
Mahiru Koizumi | Auto Focus | When concentrating in Nonstop Debates, the player will automatically target the weak spot. |
Mikan Tsumiki | Silent Massage | Increases the Focus Gauge’s recharge rate. |
Nagito Komaeda | Trance | During Panic Talk Action, lower combos will increase tempo. |
Nekomaru Nidai | Power of Life & Death | Pushing through an opponent’s statements in a Rebuttal Showdown becomes easier. |
Peko Pekoyama | Lightning Flash | Counterattacks are more powerful during the Rebuttal Showdown. |
Sonia Nevermind | Envious Influence | Increases the capacity of the Influence Gauge. |
Teruteru Hanamura | Tasting | Arguments in the Nonstop Debate and Rebuttal Showdown are limited to three statements or fewer. |
Island Mode

Similar to the original *Danganronpa*, *Goodbye Despair* includes a bonus mode unlocked after finishing the story. In this mode, Usami successfully defeats Monokuma, allowing the students to follow the initial plan of peacefully living and getting to know each other on the island. Players are responsible for managing daily tasks to maintain the island, and they also have opportunities to build relationships with their classmates.
Island Mode isn’t essential to the story and isn’t part of the main plot, but it lets you experience any character interactions you skipped during your first playthrough. If you enjoy getting to know the characters and unlocking achievements, it’s a good idea to collect gifts to give to your classmates. The characters are surprisingly complex and interesting, and this mode offers a relaxed way to build relationships with them without the pressure of the main game’s mystery.
Each Character’s Preferences
Okay, so if you’re trying to max out relationships in this game, you *need* to know everyone’s absolute favorite gifts. I’ve put together a list of those ‘Loved’ gifts – the ones that really make a difference when you’re finishing up a character’s story. A lot of characters have tons of gifts they *like*, but this focuses on the best ones. I’m just listing a few here, but I’ve included links to each character’s full gift list on their wiki page if you want to see everything!
