In the deadly game of *Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc*, some characters are focused on survival rather than friendship. However, the main character, Makoto Naegi, thinks building relationships and trust is crucial. As you play, you can develop bonds with Makoto’s classmates, potentially creating strong friendships. These connections aren’t just for story – they actually unlock helpful abilities during the game’s trials.
Makoto needs to build relationships with his classmates and learn new skills, and one way to do that is by giving them gifts. Because time is limited and the situation is dangerous, it’s important to get it right the first time. This guide will help you find and give gifts in the original *Danganronpa* game.
Mild spoilers ahead for Trigger Happy Havoc.
Players often focus so much on solving the game’s mysteries that they forget to build relationships with their classmates. This is a missed opportunity! Getting to know people during Free Time unlocks valuable skills that directly help Makoto during trials – skills that can even save his life. Some of these skills are incredibly powerful and can only be obtained by giving gifts to the right characters.
How To Obtain Gifts

Players can get gifts for their classmates at the MonoMono Machine in the School Store. It costs one Monocoin per item. At first, you’re unlikely to get a duplicate, but the more items you collect, the higher the chance of getting something you already have. You can spend extra Monocoins to lower the chance of getting duplicates, but this won’t give you more than one item per try. Makoto will only receive a single item each time he uses the machine.
Don’t worry if Makoto has received a gift before – it’s common for students to like the same things! In fact, there are two gifts that *all* the students love, making them excellent choices. Those are the Hope’s Peak Ring and the Funplane.
Non-Giftable Items

Throughout the game, you’ll collect items that appear in your gift list but can’t actually be given to Makoto’s classmates. If you try, the game will let you know it’s a special “key item” and can’t be gifted.
The first two items you can’t give as gifts unlock special bonus content. You can find A Man’s Fantasy (Item 91) in the MonoMono Machine during Chapter 2. If Makoto has it with him in Chapter 3, he’ll see a scene of a steamy bathhouse. The Escape Button (Item 92) might drop from the MonoMono Machine after you finish Chapter 6, and it will unlock an alternate ending that you can access from the main menu.
So, as I play through the game, Makoto gets these little keepsakes at the end of each chapter – things that remind me of what happened and, sadly, sometimes of characters who didn’t make it. They’re numbered 93 through 100, but I can’t give them to anyone else in the game. Also, whenever I finish a classmate’s report, I get a… well, let’s call it a ‘friendship token.’ Those are numbered 101 to 114, and those can’t be gifted either. Basically, they’re just for collecting, it seems!
School Mode

After finishing the main story, players unlock School Mode, a peaceful version of the game where no one gets killed. While collecting materials to build extra Monokumas, you’ll have lots of opportunities to interact with your classmates. It’s like a dating sim, letting you experience any Free Time Events you didn’t see during your first playthrough.
This game mode isn’t required to enjoy the game, but it offers a nice way to learn more about the characters, particularly those who don’t survive long. It focuses on building relationships through gift-giving, and thankfully, all the gift options and how to get them are unchanged.
Gift Preferences & Unlockable Skills
Every classmate Makoto interacts with has a list of gifts they love and gifts they like. After completing a character’s first hangout event, you’ll need to give them a liked or loved gift each time you spend time with them to unlock the next event and update their report card.
Here’s a complete list of gifts each character loves. Because the list of gifts they *like* is much more extensive, we’ve included a few examples here, and links to the Danganronpa wiki for a full, detailed guide.
