- Born Again promises to maintain Netflix Daredevil’s violence, tension, and character depth.
Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson, the directors of “Daredevil: Born Again“, shared that a particular scene from the Netflix series’ third season served as inspiration for their work on the Disney+ sequel.
The production of the series “Daredevil: Born Again” was temporarily halted due to the 2023 actors’ and writers’ strikes, causing Marvel Studios to reevaluate the footage. They concluded that the series required a major creative overhaul, even though six episodes had already been filmed. As part of this substantial revamping, “Daredevil: Born Again” welcomed Moorhead and Benson as directors, with Dario Scardapane joining the team as showrunner, scriptwriter for new episodes, and contributor to the existing episodes’ additional material. Notably, Moorhead and Benson have previously directed “Loki” season 2 and “Moon Knight,” but “Daredevil: Born Again” represents a more realistic addition to Marvel Television’s Disney Plus collection. Fortunately, both directors familiarized themselves with Netflix’s “Daredevil” series to prepare for “Born Again.
Daredevil: Born Again Directors Studied One of the Netflix Show’s Most Iconic Fight Scenes
In an interview with Collider, Moorhead and Benson shared insights about transitioning from working on Moon Knight and Loki season 2 to Daredevil: Born Again. Moorhead expressed some reservations about taking on Daredevil: Born Again, fearing they might not meet fan expectations or their own standards. However, since everyone involved in the project was also fans of the original Netflix show, they found it straightforward to adapt and trust their instincts. Benson further mentioned that they had studied the iconic prison fight scene from Daredevil season 1 on Netflix to enhance their skills as filmmakers. Therefore, they considered it a unique opportunity to utilize those learnings in crafting fight scenes for Daredevil: Born Again.
Something quite captivating, not something I ever considered from this angle, yet recall the renowned episode featuring an inmate in Season 3? We delved deep into that episode for educational purposes as filmmakers. The intrigue lies in moving from dissecting it to feeling compelled to offer our interpretation of it. It was a truly unique journey.
Benson mentioned the intense prison fight sequence in the third season’s episode “Blindsided” of Daredevil. This highly acclaimed episode showcases Matt Murdock sneaking into a prison to gather intel on Wilson Fisk’s plans. Unbeknownst to Murdock, Fisk had predicted his visit and set free the inmates. Consequently, Murdock must battle through both the prisoners and guards who were working for Fisk to break out of the penitentiary during an approximately 10-minute long action scene. The creators boast that this prison riot is one of Daredevil’s finest fight scenes due to its cinematography, combat choreography, and acting.
Fans can now breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Eric Robert Moorhead and Kevin Biegel, who were part of the Netflix series ‘Daredevil’, will be involved in the Disney Plus series ‘Daredevil: Born Again’. Some fans had concerns when the new series was announced as they wondered if it would tone down the violence due to Disney’s family-focused image. Although violence wasn’t the only factor that made Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ a hit, it did play a crucial role in distinguishing the show from other superhero productions and heightening the tension by showing that even if characters survived fights, they would be left with severe injuries. Thankfully, Marvel Studios has given its approval to the violent narrative of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’, allowing the creative team to push the boundaries further with violence and gore.
Indeed, the showrunner of “Daredevil: Born Again” had some critics when he voiced concerns about the dialogue in the Netflix series, leading to speculation among fans that the creative team might not fully grasp what made the original so popular. However, early responses to “Daredevil: Born Again” suggest that they’ve nailed both the subtle character interactions and intense fight sequences. Fans won’t have to wait long before they can make their own opinions about it.
Daredevil: Born Again premieres on March 4, 2025, on Disney Plus.
