As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast who’s witnessed the rise and fall (and sometimes rise again) of countless heroes and villains in the expansive MCU, the introduction of Muse in Daredevil: Born Again has me intrigued to say the least!

Over the weekend, one of Disney’s major annual events, D23, took place. This special gathering offered an extensive peek into the future content lineup across various platforms, showcasing the diverse array of brands under the Disney umbrella. Among the highlights was a detailed look at the upcoming Marvel Studios projects, and one of the most eagerly awaited projects unveiled was none other than “Daredevil: Born Again.” This upcoming collaboration between Disney+ and Marvel Television is set to introduce Matt Murdock into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). While classic enemies like Wilson Fisk and Bullseye were showcased in the trailer presented at the event, a new adversary was also spotted – Muse.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always been intrigued by the enigmatic character, Muse, even though his history with Daredevil in the comics might not be as extensive. Yet, he leaves an indelible mark on the Man Without Fear. This twisted and lethal adversary turns his victims into macabre masterpieces, offering Matt Murdock a fresh type of evil to confront. Unlike common gangsters or superpowered foes, Muse is more akin to a tormented artist who creates through destruction, not for profit or power, but some misguided form of artistic expression. So who is Muse and what could his role be in the upcoming MCU’s Daredevil: Born Again series? That’s a question I eagerly await an answer to!

Muse’s Comics History, EXPLAINED

One intriguing aspect that distinguishes Muse from other antagonists in Daredevil’s collection of foes is the enigma surrounding his background. Reminiscent of Batman’s Joker, who lacks an established identity or past and is only subject to speculation, Muse has never been formally identified. His introduction occurred following his sending of Blindspot, a vigilante who had learned from Daredevil, to the location of his initial artwork creation. Upon arrival, Blindspot stumbled upon a gruesome mural at the address, painted in blood, which contained the blood of more than 100 missing individuals.

A few weeks had passed, and he himself destroyed his mural and guided investigators to another structure where they uncovered the lifeless bodies of six Inhumans, staged to seem engaged in ordinary chores. At that moment, Matt was serving as an assistant district attorney. He stumbled upon the crime scene, feeling Muse lurking as the police unearthed his artwork. To evade capture, Muse employed a fake grenade when Matt donned his Daredevil costume and gave chase. Over time, Muse demonstrated his extraordinary talents, not just super strength and speed, but also his capacity to function like a vortex, absorbing all sensory data in his surroundings simultaneously.

In a turn of events, Muse aimed to discourage people from visiting his mural by disrupting a court hearing. This led to a clash with Muse, during which he attempted to prevent the abduction of a judge but ended up being captured himself instead. Upon rescuing Blindspot, Muse blinded him before fleeing. This act diverted Matt’s attention, leading him to a room filled with 100 missing individuals, still alive and suspended from the ceiling. Later, Inhuman officials apprehended Muse on the rooftop, revealing his face beneath the mask – a sight that chilled Matt to the bone. However, Muse managed to break free and create murals of various vigilantes, fueling Kingpin’s anti-vigilante campaign. A healed Blindspot eventually defeated Muse in combat, but instead of killing him, he refused, allowing Muse to walk into a burning building, seemingly marking the end of his violent reign.

Muse Enters the MCU

Daredevil: Born Again Villain Muse, EXPLAINED

At D23, a sneak peek of footage hinted at brief appearances from Muse, which has sparked intriguing speculations about the future trajectory of Daredevil as he enters the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given that The Punisher and Fisk are also set to appear, it seems fitting to explore Muse’s narrative now. In the lore, The Punisher was falsely accused by Muse for the killing of police officers during one of his Punisher murals, and the D23 sneak peek showcases such murals within the city.

As a gamer, I’d say that in this new game, Muse is going to push Daredevil like never before. Unlike the villains he’s faced so far, Muse isn’t fueled by supernatural powers or dark forces. Instead, he wields abilities more commonly associated with big-league heroes like the Avengers. But that’s not what makes him truly challenging. No, the real test comes from Muse’s actions, as he’s not just a common criminal or a highly trained warrior from The Hand. Muse is an unpredictable element, a chaotic force who carries out his heinous acts under the guise of “art”.

In a possible twist for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Muse could transform into a formidable menace that provides Wilson Fisk with the justification he requires to banish superheroes in New York City, thereby making Daredevil, Punisher, and others outlaws. No matter which path the MCU chooses for Muse, it’s evident that the presence of this villain is intended to drive Matt Murdock to his limit. Characters like Fisk, Bullseye, and even the introduction of White Tiger will undoubtedly enable a malevolent character such as Muse to leave an indelible mark on Hell’s Kitchen’s Devil, creating a tumultuous narrative.
