Daredevil: Born Again: Who Is Buck Cashman?

Daredevil: Born Again: Who Is Buck Cashman?

As a long-time Marvel fan and avid gamer, I’ve seen my fair share of superheroes and villains come and go. But Buck Cashman, AKA Bullet, is a character that has always intrigued me. From his humble beginnings as a government operative to his tumultuous relationship with Daredevil, there’s just something about this hulking brute that keeps me hooked.

Daredevil: Born Again represents a crucial comeback to the gritty, down-to-earth realm of Marvel’s superhero-infused world. Whereas Captain Marvel and the cosmic Guardians traverse galaxies defending planets, the true grit of the story unfolds in the shadows of back alleys. The street-level tales within the MCU are brimming with lesser-known heroes and villains who lack extraordinary powers to garner attention. Characters such as Buck Cashman boast no more than the brawn of ten men, a power that can just as easily be used for nefarious purposes.

Among Marvel’s upcoming lineup, it’s fair to say that “Daredevil: Born Again” is generating the greatest excitement. The format for a Marvel TV series has evolved quite a bit over the past few years. Many fans are eager for a revisit to the Netflix era or even a glance back at “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” The current shows span a broad range of quality, but most seem more like side-stories or missteps. “Daredevil” could steer things onto a better path.

Who is Buck Cashman in Marvel Comics?

Daredevil: Born Again: Who Is Buck Cashman?

Full Name Buck Cashman
Alias Bullet
Created By Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr.
First Appearance Daredevil #250 (September 1987)

Buck Cashman is an elite government operative, holding top-tier security clearance. Unlike typical agents, Marvel comics depict him as a genetically enhanced individual, or a ‘human mutate.’ Standing at around six feet and six inches tall, with a weight nearing 400 pounds, Buck shares a physical resemblance to Wilson Fisk, granting him similar levels of superhuman strength, speed, and durability. Marvel’s internal rating system even places Buck above Fisk in terms of raw power. He is also proficient in martial arts, thanks to his extensive government training, which enhances his precision and agility despite his colossal size. When duty calls, he operates under the alias ‘Bullet.’ In his personal life, Buck is a father who has an ambiguous relationship with the mother of his child.

Initially, Bullet was employed by Wilson Fisk under the supervision of the government, a job that involved him assisting a hired terrorist in bombing an environmental group called Save the Planet. The bombing was orchestrated by both the Kingpin and the US Army, with the intention being to frame the group for a crime. Matt Murdock, also known as Daredevil, interfered but ultimately allowed Bullet to escape following a sham arrest. Later, Bullet killed a man in an attempt to pin the blame on Save the Planet, which led to a confrontation between him and Daredevil. Daredevil was able to get Bullet arrested for murder, yet his connections managed to clear him of any charges. As part of various villainous factions, including Typhoid Mary’s group that attempted to assassinate Daredevil, Bullet continued his criminal activities. In retaliation, Daredevil formed an alliance with Bullet’s son and engaged in a fierce battle against him, halting only when he understood that money was the sole driving force behind Buck’s actions. After overthrowing Fisk, Bullet transformed into a rogue mercenary, associating himself with numerous individuals. This association led to multiple failures, close calls with death, and even a near-fatal wound from one of Warpath’s hunting knives; however, it allowed him to remain active in his criminal pursuits.

Bullet tried to leave his life of crime behind. He took on an F.B.I. assignment to track down Bullseye, later suffering torture at the villain’s hands. He retired to a remote cabin, living in peace with his dog. Bizarrely, a symbiote called Phage developed the same desire. Phage bonded to Buck’s dog, then took over Buck’s body to serve Carnage. The symbiote robbed Buck of his free will for a while, forcing him to act as a weapon for Carnage’s whims. He worked to kill targets on the monster’s behalf, only stopping after a fall that almost killed him. Buck went to prison for his actions, but Daredevil broke him out. In his most recent appearance, Buck joined Daredevil’s Fist team to fight Frank Castle’s revamped ninja clan known as the Hand.

Who could Buck Cashman be in Daredevil: Born Again?

In the upcoming series, Daredevil: Born Again, spectators might not recognize the character, Buck Cashman, due to his appearance differing significantly from how he looks in the comics. Photos from the set depict a man in a suit who bears little resemblance to the comic book version of Buck. Interestingly, he’s standing next to Fisk, but they appear to be roughly the same height and build, which is unusual given that Buck should tower over Fisk. It seems as though a wrestler like Braun Strowman would have been more fitting for this role. Additionally, Fisk is surrounded by numerous mysterious henchmen, some of whom share names with characters from the comics. Given the plethora of new characters in this series, it’s unlikely that Buck will receive much attention or the limelight he might expect.

Who will play Buck Cashman in Daredevil: Born Again?

Art Froushan has been cast as Buck Cashman in the upcoming series “Daredevil: Born Again.” Froushan, who was born in Connecticut but spent his childhood in London, is a well-respected actor on television. He’s gained recognition for numerous captivating roles in fantasy TV shows. Most famously, he played Jonah Breakspear in Amazon Prime Video’s “Carnival Row.” You might also recognize him from the History Channel’s “Knightfall” series and HBO’s “Strike Back.” Additionally, Froushan made a notable appearance as Ser Qarl Correy in the first season of “House of the Dragon,” where he portrayed Laenor Velaryon’s secret lover who vanished with the prince before the end of the first season.

He might seem like just a violent henchman, but his personal life and ability to switch allegiances make him intriguing. In the story “Daredevil: Born Again”, Arty Froushan probably won’t acquire the Phage symbiote, yet Buck could still play a significant role.
