Darkest Dungeon II new game mode coming in January

As a seasoned gamer with countless hours spent in the darkest corners of various fantasy realms, I can’t help but feel a surge of anticipation upon hearing about the upcoming updates for Darkest Dungeon II. The new Kingdoms mode, described as a reimagined game structure that tasks players with defending the realm from a pitiless onslaught of beastmen, sounds like a thrilling challenge that will keep me engaged for many nights to come.

Red Hook Studios, the developer, has revealed that they will be releasing a new free game mode called “Kingdoms” and the initial adventure module for Darkest Dungeon II in January on PC. Additionally, they’re planning to launch another paid DLC around the same time.

The content will be hitting the PC version on January 27th, 2025.

In simpler terms, “Kingdoms” is a fresh game mode being introduced in Darkest Dungeon II, available as a free update. It’s divided into three themed adventure sections, beginning with “Hunger of the Beast Clan”. This new mode offers a significantly revamped game design, providing a distinct gaming experience alongside the existing “Confessions” mode. Your role will be to protect the realm from invasions by novel enemy factions, starting off by repelling the relentless attack of the decaying and famished beastmen!

Chris Bourassa, serving as Creative Director, expressed: “At Red Hook, we take pleasure in bucking trends. When contemplating ways to broaden Darkest Dungeon II, traditional advice suggesting mere content addition left us unimpressed. Instead, we challenged ourselves to overhaul the very framework of DDII. This creative exploration led us to conceive a completely novel gameplay mode: Kingdoms.

The game “Kingdoms” provides an alternative storyline similar to the main DDII campaign (“Confessions”), and significantly alters almost every aspect within it. Gamers will traverse a continuous Kingdom map, moving from Inn to Inn, in a race to finish a quest chain before the clock runs out. They’ll confront a new menacing enemy to protect their territories, fulfill contracts, enhance and safeguard Inns – all while rotating their teams to rest their most worn-out characters.

We agree, inflation sucks – that’s why all three Kingdoms modules are FREE updates to Darkest Dungeon II!”

In Darkest Dungeon II, the Inhuman Bondage DLC offers a fresh mini-region called The Catacombs, along with a beloved character from the original Kickstarter campaign, The Abomination, as a new playable hero. Players are invited to descend their stagecoach into the underbelly of the Kingdom to confront a dangerous, corrosive enemy residing there. This region, known for its high risk and potential for significant rewards, introduces a faction of new enemies, items, and will add excitement and challenge to both ‘Confessions’ and ‘Kingdoms’. The Abomination comes with unique gameplay mechanics, trinkets, signature items, palettes, weapon kits, and a fully voiced backstory that includes playable flashback encounters.

Darkest Dungeon II is out now for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.
