Darksiders 1 is Making a Comeback on PS5 and Xbox

This year, the original Darksiders game, first released in 2010, is being remastered for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Developed by Vigil Games and published by THQ, Darksiders is an action-packed hack-and-slash game inspired by titles like Devil May Cry and God of War. Players take on the role of War, one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. The game was a commercial success for THQ and led to a sequel, Darksiders 2, in 2012, shortly before the company closed down.

Nordic Games eventually bought the rights to the Darksiders franchise, including the THQ name, and rebranded as THQ Nordic. In 2016, they released an updated version of the original game, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition, following a similar update for Darksiders 2: Deathinitive Edition the year before. These updated releases were successful, allowing THQ Nordic to continue the series with the release of Darksiders 3 in 2018. A prequel spinoff, Darksiders Genesis, followed in 2019, and a new main installment is currently in development.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition Coming to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 19

THQ Nordic is bringing Darksiders: Warmastered Edition to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. To mark the announcement, they’ve released a new trailer. The updated game will be available on May 19th for $29.99, and players can purchase it as a physical copy or download it digitally.

Details about the upgraded version of the game are still limited. However, it will run in native 4K resolution with a consistent 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 5. The Xbox Series X/S versions are expected to have similar visual improvements. Players on PlayStation 5 will also be able to take advantage of the DualSense controller and Activities Cards. It’s currently unknown if owners of the PlayStation 4 version will be able to upgrade to this new version, unlike what happened with the PlayStation 5 re-release of Darksiders 2.

It’s notable that Darksiders is being re-released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, marking its appearance on three different console generations. This puts it in the company of games like The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto 5, which have also been re-released multiple times. While Darksiders does have sequels now, unlike some other frequently re-released games, it’s still surprising to see it ported to new consoles. The trailer suggests this new version is a fairly basic port and won’t really take advantage of the advanced technology of the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X/S.

This updated version of the original Darksiders game likely serves as a way to build anticipation for the upcoming Darksiders 4. THQ Nordic first hinted at the new game in 2024 and confirmed it as the fourth main installment in the series, planned for release in 2025. While updates have been scarce since the initial announcement, THQ Nordic’s parent company, Embracer Group, stated in February they’ll release a major, internally developed game this fiscal year. This re-release could be a way to keep fans engaged until THQ Nordic is ready to fully reveal the long-awaited Darksiders 4.
