It’s confirmed: The fourth installment of the Darksiders series is underway, and it promises to serve as a genuine follow-up to the initial game, with all four Horsemen set to appear as playable characters. At this point, specifics about the game are scarce, but we do know that Darksiders 4 will be playable on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
As a die-hard Darksiders fan, I was overjoyed when THQ Nordic confirmed on August 2, 2024, that a new installment in the epic series was underway. The tantalizing teaser trailer left me guessing though – will it be a sequel, a parallel game like Darksiders 2 or 3, a prequel like Darksiders Genesis, or a remake of the original masterpiece? Only time will tell!
A little over a year has passed, and THQ Nordic has officially announced that Darksiders is indeed receiving a long-awaited sequel. During their presentation, a tantalizing teaser trailer for what appears to be Darksiders 4 was unveiled, confirming its arrival on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S systems. The video reprises the dialogue from the end of Darksiders, where Uriel inquires if War will embark on a multi-front battle against his pursuers by himself. In response, the solitary Horseman declares he won’t fight alone, and soon enough, Death, Fury, and Strife join him, suggesting they may be allies in this new adventure.
Darksiders 4 Is a Proper Sequel to the Original Game
Although the trailer doesn’t reveal much about the gameplay, a Steam page for Darksiders 4 offers additional insights. This sequel will pick up where the original Darksiders game ended, ensuring it’s a faithful follow-up to the initial installment. The action-adventure game, viewed from a third-person perspective, will incorporate puzzles similar to its predecessors, as well as swift, intense combat that seamlessly blends melee attacks, agile movement, and supernatural abilities. Notably, players will have control over all four Darksiders Horsemen, each with their distinct weapons and fighting styles. The game also appears to include online cooperative play, suggesting multiple players might be able to control different Horsemen concurrently.
For nearly 15 years now, the initial Darksiders game has been making waves. Since then, there have been three more Darksiders titles, but none can truly be considered sequels. Darksiders 2 and 3 revolve around Death and Fury’s escapades within the same timeline as the first game, while Genesis serves as a prequel. With fans eagerly anticipating the next chapter for almost two decades, the news that they will soon uncover what lies ahead in the series is incredibly exciting!
It seems that THQ Nordic has yet to announce a release date for Darksiders 4, and the absence of gameplay footage suggests it may still be some time before we can play it. However, the anticipation is building as we know it’s on its way, even if it doesn’t arrive until 2026, 2027, or beyond. Just knowing that a new Darksiders game is in development is enough to get gamers excited!
