Darth Maul is Officially Back & Better Than Ever

The following contains spoilers for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord Season 1, Episode 1, “Chapter 1: The Dark Revenge”

Darth Maul is a hugely popular character in the Star Wars universe. He first appeared in Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace and quickly won over fans. Though he seemingly died in that film, he was brought back to life in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series, where he once again became a fan favorite.

The comic series Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord explores the story of Maul’s actions leading to the decline of the Jedi Order. While fans are familiar with how Maul’s story ends in Star Wars: Rebels, this series promises to fill in the gaps between his animated appearances. The first issue is a strong start to the series, and many fans are eager to see what the former Sith Lord does next in his quest for revenge.

Maul’s Television Return Is Very Promising, With Some Slight Drawbacks

The Animation and Art Style is Perfect for the Former Sith

The first episode of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is a strong beginning to what could become the most popular Star Wars animated series of the decade. It showcases the show’s strengths, like a better visual style, fast-moving plot, and action that’s both brief and important. While the animation borrows from previous series like The Bad Batch and the final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, it’s been noticeably updated with a new look. Details and backgrounds are intentionally somewhat blurred to create a more exciting and energetic viewing experience.

Similar to other Star Wars shows, this series relies heavily on lighting to tell its story in a nuanced way. The way light plays on each character is crucial, often as important as the dialogue or action. The series explores Darth Maul’s internal struggle—his desire for revenge versus his need to hide his true intentions from the Empire—and this conflict is beautifully shown through both the lighting and the writing.

However, the first episode isn’t perfect. It starts with Maul, now leading a diminished Shadow Collective, seeking revenge on those who benefited from his time away. The episode excels at introducing the key characters and demonstrating their abilities. Despite this, it noticeably overlooks a significant weakness of one of them.

Even the short glimpses of Maul fighting with his lightsaber show he’s become an even more skilled warrior. But his real strength now lies in the surprisingly effective, though small, group he’s assembled. It’s clear he doesn’t consider anyone in this group his equal. Unfortunately, the first episode doesn’t explain Maul’s larger goals very well. This leaves the audience feeling confused, just like the members of his organization, and could be a problem for the show and its viewers.

Each New Character is Surprisingly Charismatic and Entertaining

Even the Droids Perfectly Fall into Place

Honestly, one of the best things about this new animated series is how much personality they’ve packed into the characters. Even though each member of the Shadow Collective doesn’t get a ton of screen time, they all feel so well-developed and engaging. And the folks chasing them – the police on Janix – are just as fun to watch! Brander Lawson, voiced by Wagner Moura, is fantastic, and his droid sidekick, Two-Boots, brought to life by Richard Ayoade, is an absolute comedic genius. Seriously, whenever Darth Maul isn’t on screen, those two carry pretty much every scene.

I’m really intrigued by the dynamic between this new Jedi, voiced by the amazing Dennis Haysbert – you might recognize him from things like Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Kung Fu Panda – and his potential Padawan, Gideon Adlon. She’s a total mystery herself, and I have a feeling she’s going to be a major player in the story. It seems like she might already be someone else’s apprentice, but this episode definitely hinted that she could end up training with Maul! I can’t wait to see how that unfolds.

Beyond the characters, the action sequences are the strongest part of the show. The creators are very deliberate about when and how they reveal exciting moments. While there’s been plenty of action so far, the most intense lightsaber battles are being saved for later. It’s clear Dave Filoni understands what fans are hoping to see and is delivering on that, though not always immediately. The opening scenes and smaller fights are well-done and suggest the show has the potential to be truly epic.

Maul is Eager to Make His Place in the Ever-Changing Galaxy

The Former Sith Lord Seeks an Apprentice to Help Him Achieve His Goals

The first episode is a promising beginning, and this new Star Wars show has the potential to be a huge hit. While The Bad Batch started strong, it lost steam as it went on. Hopefully, this new series can keep the momentum from Episode 1 going throughout its run. Recent Star Wars shows have often been cancelled abruptly, but things might be different now with new leadership.

Maul is a fascinating character in the Star Wars universe. Since his reintroduction by Dave Filoni, he’s been a consistent presence in nearly all the animated shows, becoming a key part of that side of the franchise. His own series now suggests Filoni has a specific vision for him, though whether fans will like that direction remains to be seen. While the series has a lot of potential, its setting during a particularly divisive period in Star Wars history has already upset some viewers.

The first episode of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is definitely worth checking out. It had a lot of promise as a beginning to an animated Star Wars series, though the story’s direction isn’t quite as strong as it could be. At this point in the story, Maul is almost entirely focused on revenge, which has been a recurring theme in other animated series. However, many fans are hoping that Dave Filoni has a compelling plan for the character. The series needs to stay consistent with Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels, but that restriction could actually end up being a good thing.
