Dave The Diver Developer Nexon Sees “Small Number” Of Layoffs

As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of empathy when hearing about layoffs at game studios like Nexon. It’s disheartening to see the industry that has brought so much joy and camaraderie to countless individuals taking away livelihoods from those who are passionate about it.

Nexon, well-known for creating the hit independent game Dave The Diver, has recently disclosed that they’ve had to let go of some employees from their U.S.-based offices due to a relatively limited workforce reduction.

As a gamer, “Apparently, according to what I’ve heard, the company is restructuring, which includes letting people go. This is supposedly to establish a fresh Western Development Group as part of their long-term strategy for expanding intellectual properties.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’d rephrase it as: “For me, a crucial part of our project involves hyperlocalization – tailoring our games to suit the preferences of players in major regions like Europe and North America. A significant move towards this goal is the formation of the Western Development Group right here in Los Angeles, spearheaded by Nexon veteran Hanbyeol Oh.

As I’m typing this, my heart skips a beat as I read the news: a restructure is underway at Nexon America. Unfortunately, it seems some positions are being phased out, but those leaving will receive severance packages. But here’s the silver lining – we’re on the hunt for new talent! Engineers and designers, listen up – we need you to join our dynamic development team. It’s an exhilarating time here at Nexon America, and we can’t wait to reveal more about our upcoming plans.

We’ve contacted Nexon for further information about the layoffs, specifically the total number of affected employees. If we receive a reply, we’ll update this article accordingly.

Approximately 13,000 jobs in the gaming industry were reported to have been lost in the year 2024. This figure is significantly higher compared to the around 10,500 job losses experienced in 2023, indicating an additional loss of over 2,000 positions.
