Summary
- David Harbour wanted Hopper to die in Stranger Things Season 1
- Harbour shared he is happy Hopper didn’t die as planned
- Actor praised the epic conclusion in the Stranger Things Season 5 finale
Among all the compelling and skillfully crafted characters in the popular Netflix show “Stranger Things“, I find Jim Hopper (David Harbour) to be particularly captivating and relatable. Following the tragic loss of his daughter Sara to cancer, Hopper has been leading a bleak existence in Hawkins, Indiana. However, his life takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Jane, who is subsequently known as Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown). The relationship between Hopper and Eleven is heartwarming, and as they spend more time together, they both grow increasingly comfortable in expressing their feelings and being truthful with each other.
David Harbour recently spoke about the development of Hopper’s character, and with anticipation for ‘Stranger Things’ season 5 set to debut in 2025, I’m relieved that this particular plan wasn’t implemented.
David Harbour Thought Jim Hopper Would Die In Stranger Things Season 1, But That Would Have Been A Problem For Stranger Things Season 5

In an interview with British GQ in April 2025, David Harbour shared that he believed Jim Hopper’s character should have perished at the close of Stranger Things season 1, as it would allow him to express regret to his daughter Sara. The actor discussed the concerns among fans regarding Hopper’s fate at the end of Stranger Things season 3 due to his capture, with Harbour stating:
In simpler terms, it seems they found deep appreciation in the poignancy of his final moment. The scene was profoundly touching to such an extent that it felt as if they wished he hadn’t survived.
In simpler terms,
I’m really happy that Hopper lived through seasons 1 and 3, thanks to Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) and Murray Barlett (Brett Gelman). I believe his death in season 5 would have caused issues because there’s still so much more for him to do. I hope he and Joyce will end up together throughout the series. Additionally, I want Hopper to assist Eleven in fighting Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Given that Hopper is a crucial character who always tries to do what’s right despite his troubled past, I’d love to see him regain his confidence and feel proud by saving Hawkins. If he died before he could care for Eleven, find a new family, or contribute significantly to the fight against Vecna, it would have been unfortunate.
As a devoted fan, it’s tough to envision Stranger Things without the pivotal character, Hopper, especially in season 5. His absence from seasons 1 through 4 is unimaginable too. Though his storyline in season 4 seemed prolonged at times and some fans might argue for its shortening, I empathize with their viewpoint but also feel that by the end of Stranger Things season 4, Hopper’s narrative becomes impactful, significant, and chilling. The thrill of watching him battle the demogorgon is unmatched, and I eagerly anticipate seeing his energy channeled in season 5.
David Harbour Has Commented Several Times On The Stranger Things Season 5 Finale

Enthusiasts can’t hide their eagerness for season 5 of “Stranger Things”, and for some time now, the cast members have been expressing their opinions about the series finale. It appears that David Harbour is particularly fond of how things conclude, as stated in a 2024 interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, according to PEOPLE.
“They land the plane, and it is the best episode they’ve ever done.”
I found the conclusion of Harbour referred to as “satisfying,” which is certainly intriguing to learn. Just like many other fans, my feelings about the finale of Stranger Things are a mix. On one hand, I don’t want the series to end and it will be difficult to bid farewell to Hawkins, the Upside Down, and the group known as ‘The Party.’ However, I am eager to discover how the Duffer Brothers plan to bring this beloved show to an end.
