2019 saw Bend Studio and PlayStation unveil “Days Gone”, an action-packed zombie game set in a post-apocalyptic Oregon, playable as the tough-as-nails biker Deacon St. John. Upon its release, “Days Gone” received mixed reviews, particularly when compared to other PlayStation exclusives, leading Sony to reportedly reject Bend Studio’s proposal for a sequel. Despite this, “Days Gone” was financially successful, garnering a loyal fanbase. As of now, it remains uncertain whether fans will get a full-fledged “Days Gone 2”, but in the interim, they might find solace with “Days Gone Remastered“. This updated version offers a native PS5 edition and fully exploits the console’s distinctive capabilities.
In the upgraded version of “Days Gone” for PlayStation 5, the DualSense controller brings a sense of authenticity to both combat and riding Deacon’s motorcycle through Oregon’s expansive landscape. The haptic feedback enhances the experience significantly, as the sensation of Deacon’s bike adjusts according to the terrain. Furthermore, the adaptive triggers are skillfully employed, making traversing the bleak world of “Days Gone” more enjoyable than ever before on PS4.
In the enhanced version of Days Gone, titled Days Gone Remastered, the DualSense support is greatly valued, but the game showcases the capabilities of PS5 in various significant ways too. Running at a steady 60 frames per second, Days Gone Remastered delivers a visually appealing performance. It’s important to note that this remaster isn’t like Oblivion being transformed into Oblivion Remastered, but more akin to the transition from Last of Us Part 2 to Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. Essentially, Days Gone Remastered runs smoother and looks better on PS5 than its original version did on PS4, but it’s not a complete visual overhaul. However, there’s no doubting that the remaster enhances an already stunning game even further.
Days Gone Remastered Adds Brand-New Game Modes
The standout feature of the remastered version of Days Gone is the new Horde Assault game mode. As the name suggests, Horde Assault is a horde-style mode for Days Gone Remastered, where you must endure endless waves of zombies, or “Freakers,” as they’re known in the game. Horde Assault offers multiple playable characters and rewards to keep things interesting, creating a sense of progression. It’s an excellent way for fans to dive straight into some zombie-killing action without having to go through the story. Additionally, players can use “injectors” that increase the difficulty for extra points. Overall, Horde Assault is packed with features, action, and fun, making the $10 upgrade cost a great value in my opinion.
Horde Assault significantly increases the playtime and enjoyment you’ll get from the remastered version of Days Gone, but that’s not all it offers! New ways to experience the story of Days Gone Remastered have been introduced, such as a very difficult Permadeath mode and a Speedrun mode. Additionally, this updated version of the game includes more accessibility options than ever before, including one that lets you adjust the speed of gameplay to customize your gaming experience exactly how you like it.
Days Gone Remastered‘s new content is also available for PC gamers via the Broken Roads DLC.
Days Gone Remastered offers the full experience of the original game, combining the base game with additional content that was released post-launch. This includes the Challenge Mode, where players are tasked with various objectives such as surviving against hordes of zombies for as long as possible or racing to a specific destination.
For first-time players, the remastered version of Days Gone offers an exceptional gaming experience as they can delve into not only the captivating single-player campaign but also additional bonus modes. Days Gone revolves around Deacon St. John’s quest to find his lost wife in a post-apocalyptic Oregon overrun by zombies. The narrative, though long and at times unevenly paced, contains gripping moments and engaging side content to uncover alongside the main storyline missions. With its expansive map brimming with activities, Days Gone Remastered provides a rich open-world experience that may exhibit some repetition common in games of this genre, but maintains an overall entertaining journey.
Days Gone Remastered lets players transfer their save data from the PS4 original to the new game.
For those playing Days Gone for the first time with the remastered version, they’ll find a much smoother gameplay experience compared to those who played the original in 2019. The initial release of Days Gone had technical issues, such as unusual glitches that disrupted immersion while playing. These issues were addressed post-launch, and these improvements are now included in the remaster. However, it’s important to note that Days Gone Remastered isn’t completely free from technical troubles. Occasionally, I encountered instances where supply boxes in Horde Assault wouldn’t open, which wasn’t game-breaking but was still annoying. It’s likely that problems like these will be fixed with updates, making Days Gone Remastered an even more rewarding gaming experience over time.
Without a doubt, the enhanced version of “Days Gone Remastered” offers the optimal way to delve into Bend Studio’s expansive zombie-themed open world. The additional content, improved performance, and compatibility with the PS5 DualSense controller make it a worthy $10 update for existing players. For those who haven’t played it yet, “Days Gone Remastered” is definitely worth exploring.
Days Gone Remastered is out now for PS5. Game Rant was provided with a PS5 code for this review.
