DB Super’s Toyotaro References Dragon Ball Daima

Summary

  • Volume 24 of Dragon Ball Super teases a reference to Dragon Ball Daima with Mr. Popo having horns.
  • Despite conflicts between Daima and Super, fans shouldn’t worry as minor details don’t impact the overall story.
  • The potential inclusion of Daima references in the upcoming Super arc hints at possible alignment with the Daima events.

It appears that the next volume of Dragon Ball Super is about to come out, and it’s been hinted that illustrator Toyotaro may have referenced Dragon Ball Daimaoh in a new piece of artwork. The series took a break in March 2024, with a brief resumption in February 2025 before going back on hiatus again. Sadly, it looks like we’ll have to wait some time after Volume 24 is released for any updates regarding the series.

Given that the series Dragon Ball Daima aired from October until February, followers were able to savor another installment of the franchise as they eagerly anticipated news about the long-delayed comeback of Super. Yet, some events depicted in Daima contradicted those shown in Super, which left a bad taste for many fans.

Daima Reference in Dragon Ball Super Volume 24

On the initial pages of the Dragon Ball Super volumes, you’ll typically find a brief overview of the series, an introduction to the principal characters, as well as some accompanying artwork. In Volume 24, one of the illustrations features Mr. Popo, but this isn’t a regular depiction of him; he sports a pair of horns on his head instead.

In the initial Dragon Ball series titled “Dragon Ball Daima,” Mr. Popo was depicted without his usual white turban, and it was unveiled that he sports a pair of horns. This apparent reference to “Daima” has sparked discussions among fans, who suggest that this horned appearance might actually be an authentic aspect of Mr. Popo’s character design as envisioned by the creator, Akira Toriyama.

What Does This Reference Really Mean?

It’s possible that this is simply a modest acknowledgement of the new franchise edition, without any deeper significance. Nevertheless, it might hint at Toyotaro making adjustments to the narrative to match up with the events from DB Daima. As I mentioned earlier, Daima and Super have some inconsistencies, such as Vegeta not using SSJ3 and Goku not using SSJ4 in Super, but these are mainly minor discrepancies.

Toyotaro actually drew a few Daima illustrations when the show was airing:

In the upcoming episodes of Dragon Ball Super, we might see an increase in allusions to Daima. However, it’s important to note that as of now, no details regarding the forthcoming arc have been disclosed, leaving the plot open to potential twists and turns.

When Will Dragon Ball Super Vol. 24 Be Out?

The Japanese edition of Volume 24 is scheduled to come out towards the end of this week, specifically on April 4, 2025. This installment features Chapters 101 to 104, concluding the Super Hero arc. Unfortunately, VIZ Media hasn’t specified a release date for the English version as of now. In the US, it is expected that we’ll get our hands on the English edition within a few months.

Dragon Ball Super is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
