In the initial appearance of Batman within the DC Universe, showcased as a shadow in “Creature Commandos” against Doctor Phosphorus, DC Studios signifies that this version of Batman will introduce the extraordinary aspects of the Batman lore that make the character and his universe captivating. As a result, an impressive roster of villains from his Rogues Gallery will be introduced in “The Brave and the Bold”.
James Gunn has unveiled his DCU’s Batman project as “The Brave and the Bold,” and given the high interest in fantastical elements for the DCU’s interpretation of Batman, there are some incredible villains that could potentially emerge in Gotham, which might be too extravagant for directors like Christopher Nolan and Matt Reeves who favor a more realistic approach.
7. Owlman
Bruce Wayne’s Potential Younger Brother – A Deadly Assassin
- First Appearance: Batman #1 (November, 2011)
- Created by: Scott Snyder, Greg Capullo
Instead of mistaking Owlman from Earth-3’s Crime Syndicate for DCU’s Batman, remember that Batman could encounter Lincoln March, also known as Thomas Wayne Jr., in future stories. As The Brave and the Bold comic series is introducing a Bat Family, featuring Batman and his son, Damian Wayne, it might add more complexity to the family dynamics if Bruce Wayne has a potential younger brother who desires to eliminate him and seize control of Gotham City.
In the hidden underbelly of Gotham City, the Court of Owls stands as a formidable force, ruling for centuries. Among its members, Owlman holds significant influence. He adds a captivating twist to the Batman lore, not just being Batman’s physical match, but also serving as a complex adversary who challenges Batman’s perception of family. It’s not just Batman’s butler or his deceased parents who make up his family; Owlman underscores that Batman’s family extends beyond these figures.
6. Heretic
A Violent and Hateful Clone of Damian Wayne
- First Appearance: Batman and Robin #12 (July, 2010)
- Created by: Grant Morrison, David Finch
When Batman’s son with Talia al Ghul was born, she wouldn’t have foreseen her young assassin turning against her and assuming the role of Gotham City’s latest Robin. Consequently, she opted to clone Damian Wayne to create the ruthless, adult assassin child she had long envisioned from Batman. The Heretic endured a chilling upbringing, being nurtured by assassins and subjected to harsh experimentation for his transformation into maturity.
Because Heretic was raised as a clone of Damian Wayne and fully aware of his origins, he harbored intense hatred towards the original Robin, whom he considered a brother. He deliberately sought opportunities to eliminate this Robin character. Having Heretic serve as the antagonist in The Brave and the Bold underscores Talia al Ghul’s sinister side, and introduces intriguing themes of clones, their dark impulses, and the potential for a suspenseful evening in Gotham City.
5. Poison Ivy
An Eco-Terrorist Who Can Control Plant Life Itself
- First Appearance: Batman #181 (June, 1966)
- Created by: Robert Kanigher, Sheldon Moldoff
In a different film, Poison Ivy – who was portrayed by Uma Thurman in the 1997 movie “Batman & Robin” – might be given another chance to shine, especially in a production that’s generally well-received. This potential revival could offer an opportunity for directors like Andy Muschietti to delve deeper into the dark and terrifying facets of her character.
Consider a narrative twist where Poison Ivy, a fervent and enigmatic eco-activist, employs flora to lethally target humans in her quest to return Gotham City to nature’s embrace. This could provide an intriguing angle for the character development of a villain taking control over the city. The storyline might also delve into the complex relationship between young Damian Wayne Robin and his father, Batman, as they grapple with the question of whether or not it’s justified to eliminate these destructive forces despite their harmful effects. This dynamic could be particularly engaging, with Poison Ivy serving as a catalyst for such introspection in Damian’s character.
4. Killer Croc
A Terrifying Monster That Lurks in the Sewers
- First Appearance: Detective Comics #523 (February, 1983)
- Created by: Gerry Conway, Don Newton, Gene Colan
In the role of current director for “The Brave and the Bold,” Andy Muschietti, who has previously delved into the eerie depths of sewers through his I.T. movies, finds a perfect opportunity to infuse the narrative with an element of terrifying fantasy through the introduction of a creature like Killer Croc. The scene where Batman is pitted against this man-crocodile hybrid within the labyrinthine underbelly of Gotham City underscores that this metropolis is not merely defined by its towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, but also its hidden, unsettling corners.
In a potential Batman movie scenario, Killer Croc might not possess the dominating presence required for a solo antagonist role. However, he could effectively create chaos by dwelling in the sewers, hunting for flesh and Batman’s scent. Introducing Damian Wayne into the storyline could introduce new threats such as the risk of Damian being hunted by this cannibal. This situation would provide an opportunity for Damian to prove his mettle to Batman, while also highlighting Batman’s reluctance to collaborate due to the inherent dangers involved.
3. Mr. Freeze
A Villain with a Cold, Cold Heart for All but His Wife
- First Appearance: Batman #121 (February, 1959)
- Created by: Bob Kane, David Wood, Sheldon Moldoff
In the 1997 movie “Batman & Robin” directed by Joel Schumacher, one of the villains was Mr. Freeze, portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger. This character, if reintroduced in the DCU, has potential for a fresh take due to his ability to create powerful visuals, a somber backstory, and reasons, though slightly deranged, for attempting to freeze Gotham City to be with his terminally ill wife, Nora.
The intriguing and brilliantly cunning character of Mr. Freeze has not been fully explored in live-action settings yet. By creating a situation where Gotham City is suddenly blanketed in snow during the heat of summer due to Mr. Freeze’s actions, we can present an engaging visual narrative. This unusual event also offers an opportunity to delve deeper into this villain’s backstory, setting up a dramatic encounter between Batman and Robin, ready for another intense showdown when they confront him.
2. Clayface
A Former Actor, Occasional Serial Killer, Now Shape-Shifting Clay Monster
- First Appearance: Detective Comics #40 (June, 1940)
- Created by: Bill Finger, Bob Kane
In the DC Universe (DCU), Clayface – a composite of clay and psychopathic characteristics, has already made an appearance in “Creature Commandos” and is soon to have a movie of his own, directed by horror specialist Mike Flanagan. Given that Clayface is already established as a villain in the DCU, it seems fitting for him to feature in some capacity within “The Brave and the Bold”, particularly since his origins seem to lean towards horror and tragedy before the DCU’s Batman encounters him.
The idea of a chameleon-like figure who must maintain his clay form while infiltrating Gotham City’s populace as a disguise presents an inherently tragic backdrop, and it could prove intriguing to explore Batman confronting a creature that might eventually transform into an unlikely ally.
1. Ra’s al Ghul
The Demon’s Head, Master of the League of Assassins, and Grandfather to Damian Wayne
- First Appearance: Batman #232 (June, 1971)
- Created by: Dennis O’Neil, Neal Adams
Ra’s al Ghul is a cunning strategist who has been the head of the League of Assassins for centuries due to his use of Lazarus Pits, which renew his physical form but erode his mental stability. By defying death, Ra’s al Ghul aims to rule over a world under his command, eliminating crime in exchange for wiping it clean and starting anew – making him and Batman natural adversaries.
Ra’s al Ghul could excellently serve as the adversary in The Brave and the Bold, given his connection with the extraordinary. He is the Leader of the Demon, an ancient antagonist boasting a legion of faithful assassins at his command. Interestingly enough, he is also the grandfather of Batman’s child, Damian Wayne, which could result in intriguing confrontations between heroism and villainy.
