Summary
- Daniel Craig dropped out of the Sgt. Rock movie reportedly due to “QUEER’s” financial struggles and scheduling conflicts.
- DC Studios is now considering Jeremy Allen White for the Sgt. Rock role.
- DC Studios co-CEOs are excited about the Sgt. Rock script and are eager to showcase diverse content.
A forthcoming DC Universe film faces a change in its leading actor, however, DC Films could potentially have a new candidate in mind.
In September 2024, it became known that Justin Kuritzkes, writer of Challengers, and Luca Guadagnino were planning to collaborate again for a Sgt Rock movie set in World War II within the DC Universe. By November 2024, there were reports suggesting that Daniel Craig, who previously worked with Kuritzkes and Guadagnino on their period romantic drama Queer, was being considered for the role of Sgt. Rock. However, no contracts had been signed between any parties at that time. Despite this, DC Studios expressed optimism about Kuritzkes’ script, and it was anticipated that Sgt. Rock would be Guadagnino’s next project before he tackles adapting American Psycho. Unfortunately, it seems that one member of the Kuritzkes-Guadagnino-Craig team will not participate in the DCU’s Sgt. Rock movie.
Sgt. Rock Loses The Actor It Was Seeking
As a fan, I’ve learned from Nexus Point News that Craig has stepped away from the iconic role of Sgt. Rock. Unfortunately, the reason behind his departure remains undisclosed, but The Hollywood Reporter hints at potential scheduling conflicts due to his wife, Rachel Weisz’s commitments as an actress. The production of Sgt. Rock is slated to start this summer (as per THR), and it seems that Craig and Weisz are diligently managing their professional obligations while ensuring quality family time. According to other sources from The Hollywood Reporter, Craig may have grown disillusioned with the role after Queer underperformed at the box office and didn’t make a significant impact during awards season. However, Variety reports that an insider close to the project stated that Craig never officially agreed to portray Sgt. Rock.
Does DC Already Have a Replacement for Daniel Craig?
In spite of recent challenges, it appears that the co-CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, are enthusiastic about the script for the Sgt. Rock movie. They view this film as a chance to showcase the diverse range of content coming from DC Studios. Consequently, DC Studios is actively looking for other actors, with rumors circulating that Jeremy Allen White has been offered the role of Sgt. Rock. At present, White is busy filming The Bear season 4, but production on this acclaimed FX series is expected to finish in early May, potentially freeing up his schedule. It remains unclear whether White will accept the Sgt. Rock offer, though DC Studios is optimistic about signing him for the part.
Since Sgt. Rock is not as well-known among DC characters, some fans believe that DC Studios should have introduced their more famous characters earlier. Apart from Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and HBO’s Green Lantern series, the initial projects for the DC Universe primarily focus on lesser-known characters such as Clayface or Swamp Thing. While dedicated comic book enthusiasts are familiar with these characters, they might not be the best choices to attract mainstream audiences to theaters. However, given that Kuritzkes and Guadagnino’s collaboration has been praised, their reunion for Sgt. Rock has generated curiosity among fans. With a compelling script and the right actor, Sgt. Rock could offer an intriguing addition to the DCU franchise.
Sgt. Rock is in development at DC Studios.
