As a long-time admirer of the Dark Knight and his intriguing world, I wholeheartedly agree with this insightful piece. The beauty of Batman lies not only in his dark and brooding persona but also in the colorful cast of villains that populate Gotham City’s underbelly.
The DC Universe is all set to rekindle hope for DC enthusiasts on the silver screen as Superman makes his comeback in cinemas on July 11, 2025. However, fans will have to be patient a bit longer before they catch a glimpse of the DCU’s Batman, scheduled to premiere after that date, in Andy Muschietti’s film titled The Brave and the Bold. Given the DCU’s potential to introduce fresh aspects to the Batman lore, there are several elements that could set it apart distinctly.
For the DC Universe (DCU) to make its version of Batman a success, it’s crucial that certain key elements are included and executed well. The DCU needs to embody these iconic aspects of Batman’s story if they aim to create the most captivating live-action Batman experience yet. It’s high time for the DCU to fully embrace these defining characteristics of Batman’s mythos.
8 Batman’s No-Kill Rule
Batman Should Never, Ever Kill, It’s Engrained in His Character
In contrast to several previous Batman films, an essential aspect often overlooked is Batman’s unwavering policy against taking lives. This principle, non-negotiable in nature, is comprised of two key tenets: abstaining from guns and refraining from killing. While some live-action Batmans have adhered to this rule, it is crucial for the DC Universe to accurately portray this aspect if they wish to present an authentic representation of the Caped Crusader.
It’s important that Batman rescues everyone and avoids the burden of taking lives. Regardless of how stylish or appealing it may seem, Batman should refrain from killing, ensuring this principle is upheld consistently for dedicated fans to appreciate this portrayal.
7 The Bat Family
Introducing Robins, Batgirls, and More Show a Hopeful Batman
The Bat Family plays a crucial role in shaping Batman’s character, yet many live-action Batman films focus more on Bruce Wayne and Batman, often overlooking this aspect. In the DC Universe, it’s important to create a vibrant world where these elements are highlighted. Ideally, this version of Batman will interact with other heroes rather than just relying on his butler, Alfred.
The Bat Family demonstrates that Gotham can still be rescued, proving it’s not solely a battle against crime for one individual. Comprising remarkable figures such as Nightwing (Dick Grayson), Batwoman (Kate Kane), and Batgirl (Cassandra Cain), to name a few, the Bat Family underscores Bruce Wayne’s potential as both a mentor and a parent figure.
6 Showcase Bruce Wayne’s Importance to Gotham
Bruce Wayne Helps Gotham Just as Much as Batman
A rather controversial depiction of Batman is that Bruce Wayne is the mask, and Batman is the truth. However, this is something that is often hotly debated and something that the DCU should try and avoid. It makes sense for a Batman in his early years, but a Batman who has experience in Gotham should know how important Bruce Wayne is to Gotham City as its billionaire protector.
In the limelight, Bruce Wayne’s role as a philanthropist is underscored by his investment of his wealth in addressing critical issues such as homelessness, orphan care, and healthcare within Gotham. At the same time, under the cover of darkness, he safeguards the city with his strong-fisted vigilante justice.
5 Fantastical Elements
Never Be Embarrassed by Villains That Don’t Need Logical Sense
While it’s always great to see realistic depictions of villains in Batman movies, like the serial killer Riddler, or terrorist Bane, the DCU’s Batman deserves to have some of his more fantastical elements birth. Whether it’s the deranged serum that turns Kirk Langstrom into Man-Bat, the healing waters of the Lazarus Pit, or even a monster made of clay, fantastical elements are essential to Batman’s war for Gotham City.
Incorporating mythical aspects, the DC Universe can establish its unique identity distinctly from previous works, and even challenge Marvel with their own magical narratives. With Batman smoothly soaring over Gotham City and cruising in his Batmobile, discussions about realism would be minimized or eliminated altogether.
4 The Rogues Gallery
Batman’s Incredible Villains Shouldn’t Be One-and-Done
In most Batman films, a single villain appears per movie, often meeting an end or disappearing thereafter. However, one of the captivating elements in Batman comics lies in the fact that these antagonists tend to reappear, sometimes even forming alliances for mutual objectives, aiming to vex Batman and seize control over Gotham.
It’d be fantastic not only for recurring villains but also for some lesser-known, eccentric Batman villains like Condiment King or Solomon Grundy to make an appearance. After all, Batman has a unique roster of baddies, and it would be a shame not to showcase them all, even the strange ones.
3 A Comic Book Suit for the Ages
Over the course of live-action films, there have been some outstanding Batman costumes (excluding the nipple detail). Typically, Batman movies strive for a dark and gritty aesthetic, leading to an overabundance of dark hues in these suits. While some of these suits are exceptional, such as Robert Pattinson’s version, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the DC Universe should shy away from incorporating a bit more color.
This is a Batman that should embrace the golden or yellow utility belt, have a yellow border bat symbol on his chest, or even go all out and have the navy blue and gray color scheme and trunks! The DCU should have these suits look like superheroes, not soldiers.
2 Bat-Gadgets
A Utility Belt Isn’t Just For Keeping Bat-Snacks
The assortment of tools that Batman carries with him plays a crucial role in his crime-fighting exploits, often proving instrumental in resolving cases and extricating himself from tricky predicaments. His utility belt is brimming with devices for all kinds of situations, ranging from reserve quantities of Kryptonite to an array of Batarangs, smoke bombs, and even shark-deterring spray.
It’s always cool to see Batman pull out a useful gadget from his utility belt, and the DCU Batman should take inspiration from the comics and the Batman Arkham games to showcase how varied and useful bat gadgets can be.
1 The Ultimate Martial Arts Expert
Varied Forms of Combat Are What Batman Has Trained For
Instead of having superpowers, Batman boasts an indomitable spirit that has enabled him to excel in various martial arts across the globe, after rigorous training. His fighting technique is a blend of diverse martial arts styles, which underscores his formidable nature and serves as a reminder not to underestimate him.
Is it about a version of Batman who can handle and defeat five or more opponents using agile kicks and accurate punches while maintaining his signature scowl? Embracing the fighting prowess of Batman is essential to appreciating the character’s coolness, so let’s maximize this aspect.
