As a seasoned Dungeon Master with over two decades of D&D under my belt, I must say, the return of the Artificer class is like a breath of fresh air! The 2014 version was a game-changer for me and my group, offering a unique blend of magic and crafting that we’ve missed dearly.
In their upcoming release, Dungeons & Dragons is reviving an iconic character class from the 5th edition and giving it a fresh, updated version to match the newest version of the game.
In the 2024 version of Dungeons & Dragons, they’ve refreshed the character classes that were presented in the 2014 Player’s Handbook, making many of them more powerful. Unfortunately, certain content didn’t get included this time around, such as eight specific subclasses for Clerics and Wizards. Players are hoping these will be revised in a future publication.
In the earlier edition of 5E, a class called the Artificer that specialized in crafting enchanted items and weapons was omitted. This class, featured in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything, can be likened to a magical equivalent of Iron Man, focusing on arcane abilities.
Though it won’t be included in the 2024 Player’s Handbook, a fresh version is being tested through an Unearthed Arcana document, inviting fans to share their opinions. A recent video on the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel has detailed the modifications made to the Artificer in the playtest documentation.
The Artificer Is Returning To D&D
The Artificer has added new spells to its list, and can now use Magical Tinkering to instantly craft a variety of items that a D&D group might need. Additionally, they can swap out a Cantrip when they long rest.
Artificers have acquired the ability to Replicate Magic Items, which allows them to replicate existing items. As their character progresses through levels, both the catalog and strength of the replicable items grow, offering options even from future books. By level 6, these items can be broken down to restore spell slots.
As a gamer, I’ve got to say, the playtest manual is jam-packed with some cool stuff! There are four unique Artificer subclasses to choose from:
The question at hand is which product Artificer will produce next. Fingers crossed that it will be featured in a 2025 Dungeons & Dragons book, together with updated versions of the previously trimmed Cleric and Wizard subclasses. These were highly praised in the last version of D&D, and fans can’t wait to craft magical items again.
