As a fervent enthusiast, I’m thrilled to see the ever-growing expanse of the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse! Wizards of the Coast has unveiled playtest materials for fresh and updated subclasses, all tied to the captivating Forgotten Realms campaign setting. It’s an exciting time to be a D&D fan, as we delve deeper into this richly-woven fantasy world!
Many Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts have been centering their attention on the trio of fresh core rulebooks, with the final installment (the Monster Manual) set to debut on February 18th. Additionally, there are further books scheduled for 2025, with two of these upcoming releases inspired by the Forgotten Realms campaign setting, as hinted in Baldur’s Gate 3.
The books you see here are the Player Guide for the Forgotten Realms (focusing on subclasses, Feats, and spells) and the Campaign Guide for the same realm (designed specifically for Dungeon Masters to expand the setting for games).
The content of the Forgotten Realms Player Guide has been partially revealed, as a fresh video on the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel unveiled a new playtest document featuring eight subclasses. You can download this document immediately from D&D Beyond.
D&D Will Feature Eight New & Revised Subclasses Based On Faerun
The test draft for the game includes three familiar subclasses reappearing, namely the Bladesinger (for Wizards), Knowledge Domain (for Clerics), and Purple Dragon Knight (for Fighters. On top of these, there are five freshly introduced ones: College of the Moon (for Bards), Oath of the Noble Genies (for Paladins), Spellfire Sorcery (for Sorcerers), and Winter Walker (for Rangers.)
The Lunar Troubadours’ College employs aspects of the Druid class, offering a lore-rich interpretation of Bardic Inspiration. This unique ability grants them beneficial effects and also bestows the power of casting the Moonbeam spell.
Clerics specialized in Knowledge Domains can utilize their Channel Divinity ability to cast spells from their domain repertoire without using up a spell slot. Additionally, as they progress in levels, they develop the ability to communicate mentally with others, known as telepathy.
Now, the Purple Dragon Knights embody their title more accurately, for they’re capable of conjuring a tiny amethyst dragon ally to fight alongside them during combat, much like the Drakewarden Ranger as depicted in Fizban’s Treasury of Dragons.
The Sacred Pledge of Exalted Genie Paladins enhances their arsenal with various elemental assaults and defenses, as well as enchanting spells derived from the Arcane catalog, such as Mirror Image and Summoning of Lesser Elementals.
In the colder months, the Winter Ranger Squad acquires abilities that are based on cold, enhancing both their offensive and defensive capabilities. Additionally, they learn potent ice-wielding spells as part of their skill set.
Descendant of the Triad of Villains harnesses the might of the Three Grim Deities (Bane, Bhaal, and Myrkul), much like in Baldur’s Gate 3. This empowerment grants them special abilities that can either inflict additional damage on their adversaries or instill fear in them.
For enthusiasts of classic D&D literature, Spellfire Sorcery might seem reminiscent. This magical resource intertwines with The Weave, enabling it to not only mend but also inflict damage upon surrounding characters.
Bladesingers continue to excel in their unique blend of dance, magic, and combat skills. By Level 14, they have the ability to launch additional attacks as a bonus action following the use of a spell.
It’s worth noting that these subclasses are still in the testing phase, so they might undergo changes once they’re published. If you have any positive or negative feedback about them, please complete the surveys and share your thoughts with Wizards of the Coast.
