With over 40 Killers to choose from in Dead by Daylight, The Spirit is one of the originals. Though her design takes inspiration from Japanese horror, she’s a unique character, which makes her easier to obtain than Killers based on licensed properties. I’m specifically talking about how you buy her, not how difficult she is to play! Introduced in 2018, The Spirit has become a common sight in DBD matches and remains popular. The fact that she hasn’t needed major updates since 2023 proves she’s a consistently strong Killer who’s found her place in the game without needing constant adjustments.
The Spirit can become invisible, making it harder for Survivors to follow her and forcing them to use other senses. If you’re new to Dead by Daylight and want to play as The Spirit, you’ll probably want to learn about her unique perks first to create a simple, effective build. As you become more experienced with the character and unlock more options, you can then switch to more complex builds.
The Spirit: Best Non-Teachable Build
Beginner Build For The Spirit
The Spirit is a powerful Killer who excels at disrupting Survivors. While her abilities are strong, she often needs to use classic tactics like stopping healing and slowing down the game to ensure the Exposed status affects everyone, ultimately leading to eliminations.
- Rancor (The Spirit) – Whenever a generator is completed, the Obsession sees the killer’s aura for a short time while the latter sees the location of all Survivors briefly. Once the exit gates are powered, this perk permanently inflicts Exposed on the Obsession and allows the killer to kill them with their hands.
- Hex: No One Escapes Death (General Perk) – After the final generator is completed, all Survivors suffer from the Exposed status ailment, and you gain a 4% Haste effect until the Hex Totem is cleansed.
- Sloppy Butcher (General Perk) – Basic attacks cause the Mangled and Hemorrhage status ailments for 90 seconds, slowing down healing by 25% and regressing healing progress when left unfinished.
- Hex: Haunted Ground (The Spirit) – Two Hex Totems spawn in the match. When either Hex Totem is cleansed or blessed, all Survivors are Exposed for a certain period, up to a maximum of a minute, at the highest rank. The other Hex Totem immediately becomes a Dull Totem.
The Spirit: Best Build
Advanced The Spirit Build
The Spirit’s ability to move quickly makes perks like Pop Goes The Weasel, Discordance, and Friends ’til The End especially effective when playing her. If the situation becomes difficult, use No Way Out to increase your chances of winning.
- Friends ’til The End (The Good Guy) – After hooking a Survivor that is not the Obsession, the latter is Exposed, and their aura is revealed for a brief period. When the Obsession is hooked, a random Survivor becomes the new Obsession, screaming and revealing their location.
- Discordance (The Legion) – Generators being repaired by two or more Survivors within a large radius are highlighted in yellow. The first highlight triggers a notification, and the aura persists for another four seconds if the generator is no longer in range, or if only one Survivor is working on it.
- Pop Goes The Weasel (The Clown) – After hooking a Survivor, kicking a generator within a set amount of time regresses the generator by a hefty amount.
- No Way Out (The Trickster) – Hooking a Survivor accumulates a token, up to a maximum of four. Once the exit gates are powered, both of them will be blocked when a Survivor interacts with an exit gate. This will trigger a notification and the duration of the block is dependent on the number of tokens, up to a maximum of one minute.
The Spirit Best Add-Ons
Gifted Bamboo Comb
Although all of The Spirit’s add-ons improve her abilities, the Gifted Bamboo Comb is arguably the best. It speeds up how quickly her Yamaoka’s Haunting charges by 15%, letting you start a chase’s powerful phase more quickly.
White Hair Ribbon
The White Haor Ribbon works great with the Gifted Bamboo Comb and boosts how quickly Yamaoka builds up her Haunting charge by 20%.
Rin’s Broken Watch
Want to use The Spirit’s power more often? She’s a bit slower than other Killers, so skilled players focus on quickly using her ability, Yamaoka’s Haunting. The add-on Rin’s Broken Watch helps with this by decreasing the ability’s cooldown by 30%.
Muddy Sports Day Cap
The Spirit is known for her incredible speed in Dead by Daylight, largely due to her unique ability. Using the Muddy Sports Day Cap add-on boosts her movement speed while using her power by 10%.
Uchiwa
This simple add-on is really effective: it quickly restores your power after being stunned by a pallet. It’s especially helpful for new players of Dead by Daylight who are still learning and often get stunned.
Rusty Flute
The Rusty Flute is an improved version of Rin’s Broken Watch. It makes The Spirit’s power refill 40% faster.
Dried Cherry Blossom
The best Add-Ons for The Spirit are as powerful as those for The Blight. The Dried Cherry Blossom lets you see Survivors within a very close range – about 3 meters – while using your power. However, it removes your ability to see scratch marks left by Survivors’ footsteps. This Add-On is best for experienced players who rely on sound to track Survivors, like listening for their breathing or signs of injury.
Killer Instinct
Mother-Daughter Ring
Okay, so this Ultra Rare Add-On, like the Dried Cherry Blossom, completely removes my ability as The Spirit to see scratch marks when I’m powering up. It sounds bad, right? But trust me, it’s worth it! It gives me a huge speed boost – a full 25% faster – while I’m phasing. Basically, if I can hear the Survivors, I can close the distance on them really quickly with this thing. It’s all about audio cues with this Add-On, but when it works, it’s amazing!
How To Unlock The Spirit In Dead by Daylight
In Dead by Daylight, only a few Killers are available for free, and this hasn’t changed much over time. If you want to play as Rin Yamaoka, you’ll need to purchase her. Luckily, since she’s been in the game since 2018, she’s one of the more affordable DLC characters, costing either 2,250 Iridescent Shards or 125 Auric Cells in the In-Game Store. While her original DLC, Shattered Bloodline, is available on PC, it’s often cheaper to buy Rin individually, as she frequently goes on sale.
Okay, so if you only want The Spirit, just buying her directly is the way to go. You can get Iridescent Shards just by playing and leveling up, though it takes a while – but you can eventually unlock Rin that way. Auric Cells are different, though. You pretty much have to spend real money to get those, and the smallest purchase is around $4.99 for 500.
If you purchased the Dead by Daylight: Gold Edition, you already have The Spirit, so no further action is needed.
The Spirit As Part Of DBD Packs
For PC players, the Maddening Darkness Pack adds four new killers – The Spirit, The Hag, The Doctor, and The Clown. It also unlocks four Survivors: Ace Visconti, Feng Min, Kate Denson, and Adam Francis. The pack includes cosmetic items, but doesn’t offer any for the character Rin.
The Maddening Darkness Pack isn’t available on consoles because some of its characters are already included in the main game. The Spirit character is an exception and isn’t part of the base game.
Rin is included in the Terror Expansion Pack, featuring 11 Killers on PC and 9 on consoles.
Is The Spirit A Good DBD Killer For Beginners?
Whether The Spirit is a good Killer for new players is a tricky question with no simple answer. It depends on how you look at it.
Is Rin a hard Killer to pick up in Dead by Daylight? Not really. While she might not be as easy for beginners as The Wraith, The Spirit is actually one of the simpler Killers to learn. Her main tactic – listening for Survivors and using her phasing ability – makes her excellent at outsmarting opponents. Good headphones will give you a big advantage! Pay attention to scratch marks and don’t hesitate to use your phasing often. Like any character, it’ll take a few matches to get comfortable with Rin’s abilities, but she’s one of the easier Killers to master.
The Spirit is often recommended as a good starting Killer, but that advice isn’t quite right. Dead by Daylight isn’t played in isolation, and new players should focus on learning with characters whose skills apply to most Killers (and Survivors). The Spirit plays very differently from everyone else, depending heavily on her ability to phase through walls. Because of this, mastering The Spirit won’t help you learn how to play other Killers, making it hard to switch characters later on.
Should Anybody Play As The Spirit In 2026?
Are There Similar But Better Killers?
The Spirit is a great Killer to start with, but being easy to learn isn’t enough – she also needs to be effective as you improve. Since she costs Iridescent Shards to unlock, you’ll want to consider if she’s worth the investment, as those shards can be hard to earn. Right now, The Spirit is played by around 3% of players, putting her in the top 15 Killers. She’s popular enough to still be seen, but she isn’t considered one of the most powerful choices. In fact, The Spirit has never really fit into the standard meta because her playstyle is unique compared to most other Killers.
Yes, The Spirit is a good Killer in 2026.
The Skill Ceiling vs. Reward Gap
Spirit is a surprisingly complex Killer. While her basic abilities are easy to understand, it takes significant practice to become truly skilled with her, no matter your experience level. A well-played Spirit can potentially end chases quicker than many other Killers, even those known for their speed like Blight. Currently, the game’s focus on perks that help Survivors escape makes Spirit particularly effective, as she can often avoid these strategies altogether. To consistently win with her, players need to learn how to use sound to track opponents and master her lunges after teleporting, but these skills come with practice.
Great Counter To The Visual Terror Radius
The ‘Visual Terror Radius’ is a Survivor’s heartbeat that gets louder as a Killer gets closer. Experienced players can use this to figure out where a Killer is, or how far away they are. Certain add-ons, like Rusty Flute or Trail of Torment, can make The Spirit completely invisible for a short time. This ability, combined with her potential for startling Survivors, makes her a strong choice against common player strategies, and a fun Killer to play overall.
By 2026, players who survive in the game will be skilled at keeping a safe distance during chases, making it difficult for many Killers to catch them. However, this tactic isn’t very effective against The Spirit, who doesn’t depend on standard obstacles like pallets or windows the way other Killers do.
Similar But Better Killers?
“Better” is subjective, but the following Killers surpass The Spirit in certain ways.
- The Ghoul – The Spirit relies on her mobility, and The Ghoul is currently the best speed Killer in the game. Kagune Leap rivals Spirit’s phase, and The Ghoul doesn’t go blind in the process.
- The Hillbilly – If you are looking for a free alternative, Hillbilly is surprisingly viable in 2026. He has insta-down potential that The Spirit cannot replicate.
