Dead By Daylight's Cancelled Spin-Off Leaves a Huge Void to Be Filled

Key Takeaways

  • Dead by Daylight’s planned PvE spin-off, Project T, was canceled due to internal issues & feedback.
  • Behaviour Interactive has aimed to expand Dead by Daylight’s lore but has struggled to move away from asymmetrical gameplay.
  • PvE gameplay in the Dead by Daylight universe could have added tension & unpredictability, but the cancelation leaves fans wanting. Hopefully, a PvE experience comes to the franchise one day.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve seen many promising projects come and go, but none have left me as disappointed as Behaviour Interactive’s cancellation of Project T for Dead by Daylight. The thought of exploring the PvE side of this horror titan was tantalizing, a chance to experience new terrors beyond the asymmetrical multiplayer that I’ve grown so accustomed to.

The hit horror game, Dead by Daylight, has solidified itself as one of the key games in its genre for this generation. However, plans for a spin-off have been scrapped, which was unfortunate given its popularity among many horror enthusiasts. Despite this, the attempt to deviate from its unique asymmetrical gameplay formula will not come to fruition.

In May, during the anniversary broadcast for the game, a spin-off named Project T was unveiled to the audience. This spin-off, set apart from what made Dead by Daylight popular, was presented as a PvE game. It’s intriguing when franchises opt for a new direction, but unfortunately, Project T didn’t live up to expectations. After gathering feedback from playtesters and evaluating the risks involved, Behaviour Interactive decided to terminate Project T. The absence of Project T has left a significant void in the Dead by Daylight franchise that they hope to fill as soon as possible.

Dead By Daylight and PvE Could Be a Match Made in Heaven

Branching Out From Asymmetrical Multiplayer

For nearly eight years now, the game “Dead by Daylight” stands unrivaled as the leader among asymmetrical horror titles. Other games like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, “Friday the 13th: The Game”, and “Evil Dead: The Game” have attempted to replicate its success, but so far, none have managed to keep pace. With its unique mix of self-generated lore and popular culture references, “Dead by Daylight” has established a distinctive niche in the horror gaming world.

While it’s true that Dead by Daylight is currently focused on survival horror multiplayer games, there’s a lot of room for exploration into different genres. A recent spin-off, The Casting of Frank Stone, demonstrates this potential well. In collaboration with Supermassive Games, The Casting of Frank Stone presents the Dead by Daylight universe in a novel way, something that Project T could have achieved. Unfortunately, the cancellation of Project T means that there’s no longer any sign of PvE content for Dead By Daylight. Although details about Project T were scarce, it was an intriguing concept. The co-op shooter aimed to pit characters against monsters called The Thrall, which were hinted to appear in various forms, leaving any potential character designs and horrors as unanswered questions now.

Project T was set in the Entity’s realm in a place called the Backwater.

In terms of “Dead by Daylight”, this game truly shines when it comes to crafting chilling character designs. One of its latest original killers, The Unknown, is particularly unsettling with its twisted form. It’s a shame that the game doesn’t fully leverage the potential of a Player versus Environment (PvE) cooperative mode where each unique Thrall figure is scarier than the last. While asymmetrical gameplay can be terrifying on its own, PvE offers an added layer of suspense because it’s harder to predict the actions of an adversary. Over time, players can anticipate the moves of a player taking on the Killer role, but in a PvE setting, everything becomes more tense, which would only enhance “Dead by Daylight”.

Project T’s Cancelation Spells Trouble For Dead By Daylight’s Ambitious Goals

It seems evident that Behaviour Interactive aims to enrich the storyline of “Dead by Daylight” in innovative ways, as demonstrated by the release of “The Casting of Frank Stone”. Although this expansion received mixed reviews, it represented an intriguing effort to weave a fresh tale within the game’s universe, although its development was not directly overseen by Behaviour Interactive. The appeal of “Dead by Daylight” lies in its cooperative horror setting, but introducing Player vs Environment (PvE) gameplay could make it even more alluring.

As each fresh update and collaboration within the game “Dead by Daylight” unfolds, it’s clear that the game is set to expand even further. However, it would be fascinating to witness Behaviour Interactive venture into something other than asymmetrical gameplay. Until a much-anticipated PvE (Player vs Environment) mode graces “Dead by Daylight”, Project T will continue as a symbol of untapped potential.
