As a seasoned gamer with decades of horror gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the upcoming crossover between Dead By Daylight and Five Nights at Freddy’s is the cherry on top of an already terrifying sundae. The landscape of horror gaming has been forever changed by these two iconic series, and it’s only fitting that they should join forces to create a truly nightmarish experience.
The much-anticipated fusion of “Five Nights at Freddy’s” and “Dead By Daylight” is now confirmed, but it won’t be available until about a year from now. Given the game’s reputation for housing a diverse array of horror characters, it was only a question of when Behaviour Interactive would approach the pizzeria. In less than ten years, “FNAF” has risen to become one of the most widely recognized horror video game series, surpassing established giants such as “Resident Evil” or “Silent Hill” in terms of popularity.
Many fans view this collaboration as a natural conclusion, given that both series have significantly shaped the horror gaming genre over the past decade. “Dead By Daylight” has sparked a trend of asymmetric horror games, while “FNAF” brought about what’s now known as mascot horror – horror properties featuring colorful characters and using them to create frightening experiences. Now that the pioneer of mascot horror is joining “DBD”, it seems we’re ready for a wave of similar collaborations.
Dead By Daylight Needs to Have More Mascot Horror Crossovers
With the collaboration between FNAF confirmed, it’s clear that Dead By Daylight is now ready to explore crossovers with various popular mascot horror game series. For the past decade, the mascot horror genre has been on the rise, boasting numerous titles supported by dedicated fanbases across the internet. A simple YouTube search for most mascot horror games will uncover theory videos, gameplay footage, and fan-made edits that have amassed tens of millions of views each. Other potential mascot horror series that might join DBD in the future could be:
- Bendy and the Ink Machine
- Baldi’s Basics
- Poppy Playtime
- Duck Season
- Garten of Ban Ban
- Choo Choo Charles
- Hello Neighbor
Why DBD is Leaving Money on The Table Without More Mascot Horror
Mascot-themed horror games may be a recent development, but they’ve already demonstrated their potential as a significant market niche. The communities surrounding these games are massive across the internet, not just in the horror genre. Players globally have felt the heart-pounding terror of being pursued by Huggy Wuggy in Poppy Playtime, an experience they yearn to reenact in games like Dead By Daylight. Content speculating on series such as Hello Neighbor and Bendy and the Ink Machine has garnered millions of views each, providing opportunities for Behaviour to expand with crossovers and collaborations.
By integrating popular figures from various franchises into its gameplay, Dead By Daylight might mitigate an upcoming issue it could face with its licensed chapters: low public awareness. With hit horror crossovers like Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Leatherface, and Pinhead to name a few, the game has enjoyed significant financial gains because of these characters’ widespread popularity.
However, it’s important to note that these characters are limited in number. Not every horror character is popular, and Dead by Daylight (DBD) has already incorporated many famous movie figures, with a few exceptions. To maintain interest and attract new players, the developers could broaden their scope to mascot horror games, which would allow for exciting crossover chapters featuring well-known characters, keeping the attention of fans continually engaged.
Does Mascot Horror Fit in DBD?
There’s an argument to be made that colorful bright characters like Bendy or Baldi don’t have a place in a game with an aesthetic like DBD, but the addition of killers like the Trickster and a lot of survivor cosmetics kind of defeats that argument. It’s clear the devs at Behaviour don’t mind having a bit of fun with their characters, so an appearance by Poppy Playtime’s Huggy Wuggy wouldn’t be too far out of left field.
Another point to consider is that for many young people today, mascot horror is a significant part of their horror experience. Just as earlier generations were captivated by Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers, today’s youth are becoming fans of Bendy, Freddy Fazbear, and The Neighbor from Hello Neighbor. If DBD aims to maintain its success in the long run, these types of crossovers could be a smart strategy.
