Dead Island 3 Should Live Up to Its Name, But in a Completely New Way

Highlights

  • Dead Island 2 didn’t take place on an actual island, opting for a metaphorical one via its Los Angeles setting instead.
  • Dead Island 3 should explore different islands with unique climates like Alaska’s Aleutian Islands or Iceland.
  • The franchise could benefit from a major shift in setting to keep the concept fresh, despite the fun to be had in Los Angeles.

As a dedicated gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment when it comes to the setting of Dead Island 2. Don’t get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed hacking through hordes of zombies in the sunny streets of Los Angeles, but as someone who cherishes the original Dead Island for its unique island setting, the metaphorical “island” experience just didn’t hit the same spot.

Dead Island 2, against all odds, successfully revived the ailing game franchise. Its engaging gore mechanics and entertaining combat made for an enjoyable zombie-slashing experience. However, there was a significant drawback – the game wasn’t set on an island as promised.

In a new twist for the “Dead Island” series, instead of being based on a real-life island like its predecessor was in Banoi, “Dead Island 2” is situated in Los Angeles which has been isolated from the outside world due to a zombie outbreak. This metaphorical island setting, despite offering the unique experience of battling hordes of undead in luxurious mansions, left some fans yearning for the original tropical island ambiance. If “Dead Island 3” chooses to revert back to its roots, introducing an island with a climate distinct from Banoi and Los Angeles could keep the franchise feeling fresh.

Dead Island 3 Should Explore Different Islands

Many people picture an island as depicted in the “Dead Island” series, with sandy shores, palm trees, and seemingly endless sunshine. However, not all islands share these characteristics. While “Dead Island” has so far centered on locales boasting near-ideal weather, introducing a colder or gloomier climate could make for an unique third installment while maintaining the core theme of being set on an island.

Alaska’s Aleutian Islands

Traveling north might bring an exciting new direction for the “Dead Island” series. The upcoming installment, “Dead Island 2,” promises more content, but a third mainline game has yet to be confirmed. Regardless, establishing “Dead Island 3” in a place like Alaska’s Aleutian Islands could mark the beginning of an intriguing new story. Consisting of fourteen large volcanic islands, the Aleutians offer endless possibilities for exploration. These islands not only meet the requirement of being an island chain but also boast lush greenery and breathtaking natural beauty that “Dead Island” has previously highlighted.

Iceland and Ireland

Two intriguing alternatives are Iceland and Ireland for the next installment of “Dead Island.” Each island nation boasts distinctive landscapes ripe for compelling narratives. A trip to Iceland signifies a significant change for the series, which could invigorate the zombie genre. Featuring breathtaking black sand beaches and active volcanoes, Iceland offers stunning vistas that would create an intriguing contrast with the looming threat of a zombie outbreak in its bustling capital city, Reykjavík. The undead genre is due for a revival, and an original setting like Iceland could bring fresh perspectives to the storyline.

After the release of “Dead Island 2” add-ons, such as “Haus” and “SoLA Festival,” developed by Dambuster Studios, there are further expansion plans in store that could be intriguing for fans, offering a new island experience.

Dambuster Studios would have the opportunity to highlight Ireland’s unique charm and breathtaking landscapes in “Dead Island,” as the game is returned to its original island setting. The vibrant cities like Dublin, adorned with historic pubs, and the stunning coastal cliffs offer an enticing backdrop for the series.

After an impressive launch on Steam for Dead Island 2, speculation about a potential Dead Island 3 is growing. While players enjoyed the Los Angeles backdrop in Dead Island 2, the next installment could truly capture the series’ initial promise. Although going back to Banoi would be enticing due to nostalgia, introducing a zombie outbreak in a fresh climate might be the most effective way for the franchise to broaden its concept.
