As a long-time fan of the X-Men universe and having closely followed the evolution of Wolverine since his debut, I must admit that I was initially taken aback by the brash audacity of “Deadpool and Wolverine.” The opening scene where they make fun of Logan and its creators felt like a punch in the gut, reminiscent of the first time I watched “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” – a moment I’d rather forget.

In a fresh take, let’s say the opening scene of Deadpool and Wolverine didn’t hold back in poking fun at actor Hugh Jackman and director James Mangold’s movie Logan. Interestingly, Michael Green, who co-wrote Logan, has shared his response to how Deadpool and Wolverine mocked his film, and he was taken aback by what transpired.

With the announcement of the team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine, fans had apprehensions about how the movie would deal with Hugh Jackman reprising his iconic X-Men role following Logan, which was generally considered a fitting farewell for the character. The revelation that Jackman would play a Wolverine from an alternate universe didn’t entirely assuage these concerns as some felt it undermined the emotional resolution of Logan. Swiftly, Deadpool and Wolverine began with Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool disregarding Logan’s legacy before excavating Wolverine’s adamantium skeleton to combat Time Variance Authority agents.

During an interview with IGN, Logan co-writer Green admitted that despite being warned about the shocking opening scene in Deadpool & Wologeine, it still took him by surprise. He said, “I was told beforehand, ‘Uh, you might not be comfortable with the opening [of Deadpool & Wolverine]’,” Green recalled. “I thought I knew what would happen, but I had no idea they’d go that far.” Green also shared his thoughts on why Deadpool and Wolverine’s film seemed to pay tribute to Logan:

It seemed unlikely that they were actually planning to exhume him and present it as the real Logan. Instead, it appeared they struggled with the challenge of creating a film as exceptional as they believed Logan to be, which is quite a praise indeed! I got the sense that their intentions were nothing but complimentary towards the movie.

The character pairing of Deadpool and Wolverine is not just appreciated by me, but by many fans as well. They view it as a tribute to the era of Fox Studios, an era that produced both critically acclaimed and panned X-Men films, as well as less successful Fantastic Four adaptations. Despite its shortcomings, Deadpool and Wolverine seems to poke fun at this period while also showing reverence for it. The existence of the Deadpool film franchise can be traced back to the Fox X-Men movies, particularly the flawed portrayal of Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which inspired Ryan Reynolds to pursue a more accurate adaptation of the character. The release of test footage for the comic-accurate Deadpool film was only made possible due to its leak, a move that Reynolds himself may have played a part in. Essentially, the filmmakers are well aware that Deadpool and Wolverine likely wouldn’t exist without the Fox films, despite their varied quality.

While the team-up of Deadpool and Wolverine might not have significant implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe overall, some viewers perceive it as poking fun at the ending of Logan. Furthermore, the conclusion of Deadpool and Wolverine sees Jackman’s version of Wolverine surviving in a timeline where Logan has already died, which could be interpreted as negating the ending of Logan to some extent. However, given that Deadpool and Wolverine was a massive box office success, most fans seem content with how the movie treated Logan’s legacy.

Deadpool and Wolverine is now playing in theaters.
