As a seasoned film critic who has witnessed the rise and fall of countless cinematic endeavors, I must say that Tim Miller’s tale with Deadpool is one for the books. A directorial debut that catapulted him into the limelight, yet left his pockets comparatively empty, it serves as a stark reminder of Hollywood’s intricate dance between art and commerce.
Tim Miller made the hit movie Deadpool in 2016, which became a massive box office smash. However, despite its success, the movie didn’t bring in much profit for Miller himself. This was Miller’s first time directing a film and it turned out to be a significant achievement for 20th Century Fox.
The movie “Deadpool” narrates the tale of Wade Wilson, once a Special Forces operative, before he transformed into the wise-cracking mercenary. Stricken with terminal cancer, Wade sought solace in an experimental drug under the Weapon X program. This accelerated his healing process but left him scarred. The film skillfully combined dark humor and the protagonist’s quest for vengeance, which resonated with viewers, leading to its massive success. At the time of release, “Deadpool” was the highest-grossing R-rated movie, earning $782.6 million globally. However, director Tim Miller, relatively new in the industry at the time, didn’t reap as much profit as the studios.
At CCXP in São Paulo, Brazil, Miller disclosed the relatively modest sum he earned from directing Deadpool. Despite the movie’s blockbuster success, the director revealed that he pocketed just $225,000. While this pay was substantial, considering the extensive hours dedicated to the film, it wasn’t a lucrative endeavor for him, as Miller explained via Collider.
I was given $225,000 for directing Deadpool. It may seem like a substantial amount, but considering it’s for two years of work, it’s not a huge sum. Regardless, I’m incredibly grateful. As a first-time director, you’re expected to feel this way. My agent pointed out that I could earn more per episode on The Walking Dead!
Miller expressed his sense of pride in being part of the Deadpool movie, as he observed numerous figurines of the character at the venue. He humorously mentioned that if he’d had a share in the merchandise during the project, it would have been beneficial for him financially. Nevertheless, he was grateful for his involvement in the film. “What I feel is nothing but pride,” he said, looking around at the figurines at CCXP. “I mean, every time I walk these aisles and see all these Deadpool figurines, I think they wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t made that movie. And I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of it. Then, my second thought is, I wish I had a piece of the merchandising deals so I could earn some money from it.
Although I was fortunate to play a part in Deadpool’s triumph, I chose to depart from the franchise as a result of creative disagreements with Ryan Reynolds, who starred in and produced the film. As he put it, his desire was to maintain control over the franchise.
It’s clear that Miller significantly contributed to the success of the first Deadpool film. However, it should be noted that not every director gains substantial financial benefits from successful projects, especially for directors making their debut. In Miller’s case, the project served more as a platform to boost his reputation and visibility in the directorial world rather than a means to wealth. First-time directors often accept lower pay for the chance to make a mark or kickstart their careers. Had Miller remained with the franchise, he might have earned more since the initial movie led to two sequels. The third Deadpool film featuring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman was also a massive box office hit. However, Miller’s decision to step away from the franchise was his choice, and it turned out to be beneficial for him. After parting ways with Deadpool, Miller moved on to executive produce the successful Sonic the Hedgehog series. The latest Sonic 3, released this month, has been another blockbuster hit, leading Paramount Pictures to approve a fourth movie in the franchise.
